Hello everyone. I was thinking about getting into the MCSE field but I was wondering what you guys do exactly. I understand MCSE is a field of networking, and I was thinking you would also have to know cisco. Since cisco overwhelms me I was thinking about sticking to programming. BUt I want to give it a chance. Do you guys get involved with cisco stuff or any other aspect of networking besides working with win server 2000? What kind of problems do you guys have to solve on a daily basis like with all the stuff comming down on you from the executives from the other part of the company that hand down directives and stuff? Please forgive my novice curiosity, but a reply would be very helpful for a newbie like myself

Honestly, with a MCSE and no practical experience you will probably be stuck in a help desk type job at first.

Very few companies build their entire networks with only MS products. If you look at the job postings, most companies want Unix experience or Database experience, plus some programming ability. Having just basic MS network admin skills doesn't cut the mustard any more.

If your looking for the big $$, you will have to learn many different aspects of networking, from basic admin tasks (creating users/groups, assigning permissions, installing printers), to installing and configuring routers and switches, while also being able to design an upgrade or migration strategy to a different OS or architecture.

The more you know, the more your worth.
