You cannot upgrade Win98 or Win ME to Win2K. The only choice it allow you to choose is do a clean install of Win2K.

Sorry, not quite..

When I kept the Win 2k pro CD in my drive on my WinME PC, it prompted me that "this is a newer version of operating system, do you what to upgrade or install"..

It did its normal check compatablity check and said some other software programs install on the PC are will not be compabile with it.

and I stopped since i needed those programs.

WHAT NEXT?????/

You can upgrade 9x/ME with Professional but not with Server, Adv Server, they require clean install.

QUote from MS 2000Pro Documents at ( you know where)
During an upgrade, Setup replaces existing Windows files but preserves your existing settings and applications. Some applications may not be compatible with Windows 2000 and therefore may not function properly in Windows 2000 after an upgrade. You can upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional from the following operating systems:

Windows 95 (all releases), Windows 98 (all releases)
Windows NT 3.51 Workstation, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (including service packs)
If you choose to install a new copy, Setup installs Windows 2000 in a new folder. If you're currently using a nonsupported operating system (such as Microsoft Windows 3.1 or OS/2), you must install a new copy. You have to reinstall applications and reset your preferences when you install a new copy.

Beyond the fact that it says so in the books, I know for a fact that you can upgrade from 98 because I have done it here on numerous occasions. Of course, most of the upgrades done here were for a network conversion and split and we went from 1200 supported applications to 10 so we didnt worry much about software compatibility at the time.

The answer to the upgrade from Millenium to 2000 is...it depends The KB says no, but I know a few people who have done it.

As far as your applications go, you can check the application vendor's website to see if they have any patches or updates for your software, which make them compatible with 2000 (I believe they are called migration dll's).

If you're lucky, they will have the aforementioned updates. If not, have you conisdered dual booting?

HTH.
