| Can anyone help me?
Is there anyway that I can recover the administrator’s password for a Windows 2000 Professional machine without reinstalling the OS?
Thank you very much! | |

| hi Sunzii, as far as I know the admin is the one who rules the entire world of the domain so, unless you have assigned a user to have admin privileges, I regret to say there is no possible way(Not to my knowledge)to overcome the disaster. | |

| IN NT 4.0, Emergency repair disk can restore back Security Account, but I am not sure in Windows 2000. | |

| I certainly hope not! The answer is no, no conventional ways or not without a third party utility. I can't remember the name at the moment, but I'll post back if I can remember. | |

| There is a way to do it, but I lost the bookmark it was on a while back.
It had something to do with booting with a Linux boot disk and replacing certain files
|
| This is the hard one.
If you can log on as a user and install
one of the hacking password programs probably you will be able to retrieve administrative password for local machine but
not for domain. It was possible on NT4 I guess the same can be done on WIN2K

Most hacking programs on the internet needs administrative rights.

| Get any Windows9x boot disk and boot up to it, then CD to X:\WINNT\system32\config and delete SAM (no extension), SAM.SAV, and SAM.LOG. The SAM without an extension is actually an exe file. Those three files control the usernames and passwords. Delete them, reboot, and there will be NO admin password to worry about. However doing this will delete any other accounts that might be on this pc. But it worked for me.
"What if your root drive is NTFS?" A Win9x boot disk won't work. Then you will find your self another computer with win2k on it and attach your hard drive to it as a slave drive then turn on the machine and delete these files from the directory mentioned above. By the way i am no hacker but someone who had the same experience of forgetting the admin password. Good Luck

| I know you can boot with a Win 98 boot disk - Run NTFS for DOS - Then use Volksav(sp) Commander to get into some things. I was able to get into the profiles to back up files like that once | |

| Ok just a thought for all of you out there.....
When you install a computer system always give yourself a BACK DOOR that way if the Admin password/account gets FUBARD then you can still get in...makes sense to me...even Hackers do this one

| As long as you have the full version of NTFS dos you will be able to delete / change files. |
