| Hi
I'm having a debate with a mate about the recommended by Microsoft amount of virtual memory you should specify.
I say its 1.5 x your ram
He says 1.7 x your ram
Which is correct
Cheers

The best way to find out the recommend amount of virtual memory is by seeing it for yourself right click my computer select properties and then select the advanced tag and then the performance options.
You will see that its is 1.5 the amount of your system ram ie 128MB virtual memory is 192MB.
Hope this helps.

| Reccomendations like that are not very usefull. You need enough virtual RAM to support the maximum sum of memory requirements for the programs you are actually running at the same time. This is very dependent on the programs you run and how you use them. There is no magical coefficient.
If you specify too little you will:
- Get a performance impact because the paging file fragments
- Get warnings about not enough virtual memory
- Be unable to run successfully all programs you need at the same time
If you specify too much you waste disk space.
If you have plenty of disk space, be generous. If performance is important, add RAM.

| Ok, i have done and passed the exam and as far as i am aware the books i used said 1.5 x your current ram.
Does anyone know for sure what it should be?

the default size is 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. A small paging file limits what can be stored and might exhaust your virtual memory for applications.
Personally I always go with 2 times the ram for the paging file. | |
