1) This morning I discovered that one of my workstation won,t boot up. The error message was something like
"Boot file not found on hard drive"

2) I booted the pc with boot floppy to startup menu by pressing F8 and gave the command
A>Sys c:
to transfer system files to "C" drive

3) I restarted the system and it booted up from the harddrive. Bbut immediately after the Window 98 sign, the system went to the first screen which allows you to select country and then to the next screen that asks you to enter Product Key.

Is'nt this weard.

4) I aborted the above screens and re-booted the system to safe mode. It did successfully boot to safe mode.

5) I shutdown the system gracefully and restarted. It went right back to Windows 98 installation screens.

What is going on? Please help.
Could it be virus ? Does,nt seem like otherwise it should not boot at all. Reformatting the hard disk is the last tool that I want to use to get my system back.

Ive never tried to run SFC from safe mode but you could try that. Do you have a good copy of the registry? If so restore that too. If not you could SCANREG back to a known good copy and restore.

i think you entered the product key and you will be fine, and you don't need to format your computer.Because after you format you still need product key.

Kashif, You were right. Once I put the product key, the remaining installation went thru fine.

I guess, I was kind of surprised that I was being asked for key again.

Anyway, later I upgraded the system with Win 2000 Professonal to get started on my 70-210. While doing so I elected to have NTFS file system and every thing is working fine.

Thanks for help

Im sorry I was under the impression you were trying to recover and not re-install.

Good luck.

You get your recovery time in though!
Im working on 70-210 too! 2k has the recovery console utility.
