I want to get started with Microsoft and I like to know what good books to study and what other resource I need to help me on this particular Ceritfication. I also would like to get certified in NET+ will be a good choice before MCSE or after?

Is the Exam Cram/Prep books good for studying MCSE?

going book shopping this weekend!!!

I can’t help you out too much as far as books are concerned because I am also new on the MCSE path. I will say the Net+ will be more useful before MCSE, that’s what I choose to do and it didn’t take me too long to get Net+ certified. It will help you learn the basics of networking there’s no retesting and it’s a vendor neutral cert that will give you a good foundation to build upon for MCSE. There are also a lot of knowledgeable and very helpful people over on the Net+ forum.

Angely2j:

Can't give you advice on persuing the Net+ as I haven't done so. I think It's a good cert to have though.

As for books, I'd suggest starting with the MS Press books. It's "straight from the horses mouth", as it were. A lot of my study material comes from MOC {Microsoft Official Curriculum) after taking clases.

MS Press can be a little pricey, and the Exam Preps that I used were pretty good. I would however use them along with MS Technet *and* do the additional reading they suggest.

The Exam Crams varied in quality (IMO), the one for Server was okay. The one for Network Infrastructure was useless.

If at all possible, try to set up a home lab with 3 or 4 machines. The hands on is the best learning. I mean it's one thing to say you got to AD Sites and Services to do such and such - its' another thing to do it. If building even a modest home network is beyond your means, you might take a look at simulation software. Personally I don't think it is as good as the real thing, but it beats nothing by a large margin. Good Luck.

P.S. I did not comment on Trancender or Sybex because I have never used them.

StormWalker,

For the home network I assume if possible client-server with some different OS’s on the clients is the best way to go? I’ve got some old PC’s and am getting ready to set up a network just need 1 more powerful PC for the server. What do you think?

Yes.

Also, I got the bare bones going for AD and set up a RIS server and a client. It was kind of neat to see the client boot and watch the install go off!! <used a PXE enabled card> (I prestaged the computer.)

Of course I shot myself in the foot about five or six times before it worked, but that was cool as the errors are actually part of what you should be studying.
