The reason I asked, here is a question.

| You install a new AGP graphics display adapter in your Win 2K PC. When prompted, you load the display driver supplied by the manufacture of the adapter. After the computer restarts, the diplay goes blank. What should you do to solve this problem?
a. Use ERD to repair installation
b. Use Recoery Console to restore the system state data
c. Restart the computer and invoke the Last Known Good Config.
d. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and restore the default display driver.
Answer is C, but why not d? According to Cyber's response to my other question, you should have to go to Safe Mode.
|
| Im still working on 210, But, I would think c would be correct, Having the LKGC would set the system back to its initial state (when it was working fine).
I would think choosing D would not be a wise choice because it would be considered a seccessful logon on and reset the LKGC.. But Like I said, Im still on 210 so these are all guesses
|
| According to my Sybex books and Examcram the answer would be D. Safe Mode and remove the driver from there. When I studied for NT4 Server that same question would get an answer of C. I was getting that one wrong everytime because I opted for answer C. | |
|
| I was just taking a test in Trancenders and came across the same type of question and the answer was Safe Mode. Question 13 of Exam A | |
|
| mmm, What i would do in this position is boot in safe mode, disable the device in device manager, reboot and then reinstall driver or get a update off the internet. I thought that last known good configuration would only be used if you had just altered your registry incorrectly.
Not too sure about this question but i would have to say D is the closest match.
Cheers

| The reason you would use Last Known Good Configuration is if you try to boot in safe mode with a screen driver which doesn't work, you will not be able to see what you're doing.

| If you boot into safe mode it uses a generic driver adn not the one you have installed. | |
|
| Hi, I'm new in this forum. Why can't we pick answer "A", using emergency repair disk. Since the monitor goes blank, there is nothing we can see, I think the best way is using ERD and restore the original adapter driver setting. | |
|
| When booting you are using a generic driver. It is when windows loads that the installed driver takes over. We can boot to safe mode when the driver goes crazy. I have a Voodoo card that does it everytime I format. I have to boot to Safe Mode and change the refresh rate or I can't see anything. | |
|
| Just wondering if you boot to safe mode, now what driver are you going to use and where are you going to get it? | |
|
| Windows supplies a generic driver. Just a VGA that will get the job done while you troubleshoot. | |
|
| If your system has booted, and your display goes blank, your system may still be running correctly minus the display. This would reset your last known good configuration. Safemode is the only option in this case. Cyber is exactly right. Generic VGA driver 16 colors. Just enough to let you fix it. | |
|
| I'm leaning towards D for all the reasons above. if it's a registry or software problem use LKGC. If it's a device or driver use Safe Mode

I was under the impression that Windows2000 only considers it a Seccessful boot after you log in, How are you going to log in if you cant see anything?.. Or more less, Why would you?
Was I miss informed about when Windows2000 considers it a seccessful boot?

| Because right up to and including the logon sequence you are using VGA drivers for your video. Once you have been granted access your installed drivers then take over. (This is just about the video drivers)We have a successful logon but the video is corrupted and the driver needs to be replaced. Just like when you are logged on and you change the refresh rate and it all goes screwy. You are logged in properly and yet you can't see anything. |
