Hi,

I have been dual booting (Win 98 on C: and Win 2K on D: )

After a new installation of Win 98 I am no longer offered the option of booting into Win 2K.

And yes I knew this would happen because I read it in my Win 2K books but now I want to fix it so is there any way except a new installation of Win 2000?

You need to add a few lines to your boot.ini. I would look for boot.* on the root of C: to see if your Win98 install renamed your old boot.ini to boot.bak; boot.old; etc. your file sould look similar to this, although the lines are split up due to the format of the message window.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0
)partition(4)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti
on(4)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console" /cmdcons

the 5th, 6th and 7th lines should be on one line, and the9th and 10th should be on the same line. Attached is a copy of mine. I had to rename it to a txt extension to get it to attach. If you use my copy, you will need to change all references to (4), to (1) as I am booting w2k from my E: drive. You also need to rename it to boot.ini. Your boot.ini file, by default is set to read only, so to modify it, you will need to change its attributes. Hope this helps,

Ahem...after two failed installations I wiped C: clean, fdisked and reformated. So there is no chance of a boot.ini lieing (lyeing, laying) around.

I am going to try out your boot.ini tonight after work. I will let you know. Thanks.

You have a few other things you need to go along with the boot.ini. You failed to mention that you reformatted. You also need ntldr and ntdetect. I would use the extract utility to pull them off the cd and place them in the root of C:. I might be missing a file or two. Somebody let me know if I am.
