| What do i need to do to have win 95 clients see win 2000 adv server and vice versa. I set up directory services client on wind 95 clients. Under network places in the win 2000 adv server i can't see the win 95 clients. I set up tcp/ip, client for Ms networks etc. Can you please give me some help? | |
|
| Is NetBEUI installed? Try enabling it and see will that solve your problem. I had a similar problem trying to see 98, 2000 Professional, and Advanced Server on my home network.
good luck :-) | |
|
| I actually still have the same problem, I set up Pro on two computers, and 98 on the other (just a temp thing)And They saw each other, then installed server on one of the others, and cant see anything, I have no LAN in Network places, what option do I have to change to get that.. Do I have to install DHCP, or anything, Im just starting off with Pro So im still really new to the hole concept of server.
Any help would be great | |

| Ok this may be a stupid one but what the heck...How long are your machine names? greater than 8.3? Have they got spaces in? If any of the above applies then win95 clients will have problems as will win98 on some early installs, Win98 Second Edition cured the problem though.
Yeti....BTW I may be wrong...just an idea
Hang on a moment is WINS installed on your system? If not install it on either a Member server or a Domain Controller...should help

| If you aren't showing anything in my network places, then there is a problem with your NIC on your server. If your NIC is properly configured, you won't see anything on the server. I would right click Network Places, go to properties. Click the local area connection....look to the left side of the screen to see if it shows "enabled". If it doesn't show up at all, then the nic is not properly installed. If it shows up in Device Manager, but is disabled, you might just need to change the settings in windows provided it isn't a plug and play nic. If it shows up in "My Network Places; Properties" right click your "Local Area Connection" and check properties on it. Make sure that TCP/IP is bound to the nic. Maybe a stupid thought, but double check IP addresses and subnet masks for the server. If you can't ping any of the other systems after that, check your network connections. Also, since it doesn't sound like you are running Active Directory, you will have to add the user accounts information to the server, or they will not be able to access the server. Could be alot of things causing your problem. You might want to try a few of those things, and if it still isn't working, give more details of the problem to help narrow it down for us. You don't have to have WINS running, as you only have one subnet, and clients will broadcast for the netbios name. | |

| Sorry, I mean't if your NIC is not properly configured, you won't see anything in my network places. Guess I should reread my posts before I submit them. *grin* | |
|
| 1. Check the NICs, as sablackspot said. Add TCP/IP to the Server and the rest of the machines. Ping 127.0.0.1 (you are going to need to play with tcp/ip anyway, might as well start now)
2. What protocols are you using? Netbeui is probably what you are using on your clients.
3. How did you set up your W2K Adv. Server? Is it using TCP/IP, but not netbeui?
|
| As far as the NICs go, just make sure that they are working properly. Follow the suggestions and make sure that the light is on in short.
Use DHCP. Unless you have a reason to use static IP Addresses, I wouldn't bother. Like I indicated earlier, make sure that NetBEUI is installed on ALL computers as a protocol as well as TCP/IP.
I do not know exactly what your setup is at home, but also check your hub or switch to make sure that it is operating correctly.
Just out of curiosity, are you using Internet Connection Sharing?

| All the Above but also make sure DNS is installed

|
| I as lost here. Why the need of netbeui? | |
|
| The Netbeui issue shouldn't matter, and if Active directory is installed, DNS is installed. If you can ping the IP address of a client from the server, you should be able to find them in a search for computers by Netbios names. If you can ping on a loopback(127.0.0.1), then your nic is working. If your nic is working, but you can't ping a remote host, then you have a tcp/ip configuration problem. Make sure the client subnet masks match the server, and that the ip address places them on the same subnet. If you can ping, you'll be able to see the clients. The 95 clients won't automaticly show up in active directory. Better yet, bring me your network, and I'll fix it for you. Much easier when you are sitting at the keyboard. | |

| Hi,
When I want to "hide" my computer on the company network, I disable file and printer sharing.
You know that you are on the network because you did not get an error message "no domain server was available..."
run winipcfg to see what ip address your client machine has, then ping that address from another machine.
