hey freak i couldn't connect to your site. Anyway quoting from MS; win 2000 and nt are the only operating systems that can access data on a local hard disk formatted with ntfs. However according to replies viewers said that a fat or fat32 could see a ntfs folder or file I'm confused. Can a fat or fat32 system read a ntfs file or folder as long as its shared on a ntfs server? Can a ntfs system read a fat or fat32 system?IF i understand correctly a local fat or fat32 can't see a local ntfs but can access a shared folder read/full access on a ntfs win 2000 server as long as have right permissions?

Hi
My site is up -- the DNS server isn't, so some will not see it. Working on it as we speak http://128.242.228.49/ubb/smile.gif
As for your question, you are getting confused between 2 scenarios:
1. Win2K and Win9.x are on the SAME machine, in a dual booting fashion. If you boot under win9.x, which does not support NTFS, then you won't see that partition.
2. Win2K and Win9.x are installed on 2 DIFFERENT machines. When you boot up the client (win9.x) you can access the NTFS partition on the 2nd machine, because your workstation service (known as client for MS network in win9.x) will talk directly to the server service on the Win2K server, and that server service will rely on the I/O manager on the win2K PC to read the info on the NTFS partition, which it is obviously able to do! It will package the info -- not the file system -- through the 7 layers of the OSI and shoot them via the wire back to the client machine. Therefore, it doesn't matter what file system the info is located on if you access it via the network... makes sense?
