Just passed 70-210

| Well I just passed 70-210 allmost a week ago.
I agonized and pulled my hair out, but now the tension is over, I'm on my way. It feels like a weight lifted from me. From here on in it's clear sailing. Sure, I know the other 6 are harder, some *much* harder, so they say. But I feel I have a good grasp on the whole certification process, so to me it looks like an easy road ahead, now that I have the roadmap.
Here's what I take away from the whole experience.
The exam wasn't adaptive, tho I expected it to be. Since this was the first exam they put out, I have no idea when MS is going to go adaptive. Hopefully soon. I don't like these fixed form exams.
The passing score was only 540; again a surprise, as I thought it was 620.
The exam was difficult in the way I expected it. There is the right answer, and there is the "Microsoft answer."
Many of the questions were of a generic troubleshooting variety, often regarding devices and/or drivers and troubleshoot
ing, as well as troubleshooing failed installations.
It seems to me when you ask the IT analog of "Your car gets a flat tire. What is the first thing you do to resolve the situation with the least amount of administrative effort?" you are going to get a wider variety of responses than if you ask a simple knowledge based question that doesn't have a signifigantly subjective answer.
For me, often the answer I chose was the "wrong" one in past test simulations. Since I was hired by the school I was taking the MOC courses at, I take that as a sign I was one of the brighter bulbs in the box. But you wouldn't know it from the results of these practice exams.
So after much effort and hair pulling, here's my take on learning materials.
MOC courses: Utterly worthless, *unless* you are taking the *full* courses. (Hint: if the school isn't charging somewhere in the neighborhood 10K, you are *not* getting the amount of hours MS has set up. You get what you pay for. Check out the number of course days and hours from MS and your CTEC or AATP for each course. Example, 2152 should be 40 hours, usually over a 5 day period. If you're *not* getting 40 hours, you're *NOT* going to get much of anything out of the course.) There's just too much material to cover. Also, a school that has the stones to charge 10K+ for the full course and can get it also has the stones IMO to prb get a good teacher. Since the MOC books leave much to be desired in the way of readability, you really *really* need a good instructor.
New Riders: Very well laid out, scanty on info, but the info they do have is well focused and well explained. You won't pass the test with this alone. Forget it.
Sybex: Not so well laid out, more info than New Riders, but some of it is not relevant to the exam. You won't pass with this one either.
Alan Carter: Fantastic, but not great if you're the kind of person who skips around. You really need to read this cover to cover (easier said than done!) You'd pass the test using this, if you could manage to stay awake for the entire war and peace type read.
Troytec: Love 'em or hate 'em, my Edition 4 Troytec 70-210 had many of the questions that were on the exam, often verbatim. When confronted by a subjective "What do you do?" question, I don't consider it cheating to get the answer from Troy. I consider it a form of civil disobedience. You'll pass the test using this. But if you don't have any real experience, in your home lab or at your job, forget about *getting* a job that will actually pay you money. If adding letters to your name is all you want, be my guest.
The Best info IMO was, amazingly enough, the MS 2000 Professional Resource Kit.
I can't say often enough how fantastic this thing is, it's broken down into near microscopic detail, and it's great for the ADD ppl like me who need to skip around lots.
Best of all, if you look around hard enough, you can find this thing as a 4MB DL on the web. Again, I don't consider it cheating to DL a book from MS. Policies of MS are too far off topic. This is too long allready.
Using the Resource Kit you will absolutely pass. With room to spare. And you'll have more info about the odd little nooks and crannies of W2K than most ppl.

Thanks for the Great break down on the materials you used. I wish more people would do that.
