According to Microsoft's website I can use TCP/IP and IIS 4.0 that I've already passed towards the 2k MCSE.. So my understanding is that I only need to take the 5 core.. Is this correct or am I not understanding the website correctly..

Yes you're correct. You don't have to take anymore elective for your MCSE on Windows 2000. All you have to do is to take 5 cores(including 1 design paper) or the Accelerated(70-240) plus 1 design paper.
