Class or self-paced?

| Hey guys/gals. I am at a crossroads in my career and am really trying to decide whether I should just bite the bullet and go the $6000, instructor-led MCSE 2000 course or go out a buy the Training Kit. I completely understand that if I were to buy the Training Kit that this alone would not get me certified. I know that there are many crams, preps and videos that I would need to use.
I am a System Admin and know NT 4 extremely well, but have used Win2000 very little. We are starting to implement 2K more in the office and I have installed Win2K here at home. I think it is great and would love to learn more, but there is so much to it.
Anyhow, I am very curious what the general response is from you out there. If you have any suggestions, I welcome them! TIA!

| If you have experience on NT4, in my opinion, you can self-study. If your company for your courses, then go for training courses. | |

| I wish my company would pay for my MCSE. This economic drought has made things really tough for us so having them pay for it, is probably out of the question right now.
I think it would be much cheaper going self-paced and maybe more rewarding. I don't know. Hey, thanx for the input! Appreciate it!

| People look at the classes as a crutch...most MCSE class training is simply someone reading from a book.As an expericed NT4 admin I dont think your going to run into much trouble. Then again why do you need the cert?
For someone in the field...the training kits are to basic.Get the resource kits, alan carters books and a minasi ( from NT you know he`s superb.)
I was studying for the tests and found myself too busy with learning the platform in a production environment , which is a very different thing than home labs and the MS recommended way!
http://provantage.com has the best prices on the resource kits. | |

| You bring up some interesting points. Thanks for the response. I want the cert to stay competitive in the field, especially with today's economy. I have about 7 years of Admin and IT experience, but I would like to put an exclamation point on my career by getting some certifications, especially an MCSE 2000. You are right- I think that the classes are just someone reading from a book so I am really leaning on self-paced. What do you think about Boot Camps?

| I got the MCSE2000 without going to intructor led classes because I wanted more of a challenge. I wish the passing scores are higher perhaps over 800 for each exam as my last 3 exams I scored over 900 for 219,224,228. IT experience will help you learn the material faster but not pass the exam on experience alone.
Best of luck | |

| Hey, thanks for the response! I agree with you. I think that the instructor-led courses are a good quick-fix, but the problem I think is that these courses and bootcamps give a person the short-term stuff to pass the test. I want to really learn all that I can and be challenged. I think it is time to buy some books. Thanks!
