Win2kPro MCSE Core subjects

| Please help people. I've taken a change in career direction and approximately 3months ago I learnt about the MCSE. So I went out and purchased the MSPress core books for Windows 2000 being fully aware of its 100+ dollar fee over Sybex for example but seeing as though Microsoft makes the O/S I relied on those facts and coughed up the extra $100 for the Microsoft Press book. Now after taking a few of the online tests offered on the net, I've noticed that I have no knowledge of some of the things being asked in the practise exams and conferred with my Windows 2k Pro book but could find no reference to these materials. I was under the impression that the Microsoft Press books would follow the exam criteria exactly and that once reading and understanding the whole text I would be able to pass the test with flying colours. Please tell me this is the case and I've purchased the best possible books available to me to learn and become an MCP. If this isn't the case, please let me know which set of books you will feel is the best. Is CramSheets anygood?
They seem to be cheap and have been rated well? One final thing,I've been taking notes on this book all the way through and I've written 200pages and find I can't remember all the required text. IS this recommended or do you think it's better just to read it, cram it in there and sit these exams? Thankyou. Any input would be appreciated.

| Actually Microsoft makes no guarantee that you will be able to pass any of their exams by just reading the book. I've found that the MCSE training kit will get your foot in the door for being prepared, but you have to go above and beyond to actually pass the test. This means that just knowing the material isnt good enough, but you must also have the experience to go with it. | |
|
| I've come to learn that now, now that I've been studying for a while but I was reassured by a member of Microsoft that it would cover all the aspects of the exam and that it would be sufficient. Damn them. Just disappointed that I was mislead and spent all that extra money on their books instead of a cheaper set that probably would have been just as good. If not better as I'm starting to notice from a few reviews of the MSPress core books. Could somebody recommend a suitable study book to read over and perhaps one that would fill in the blanks that Microsoft doesn't mention. I'm looking at the examcram range at the moment. Seems to be highly recommended or the Sybex all core books bundled into 1. Cheap and hopefully just what I need. Any comments greatly appreciated. Please note that's it's not so easy for me to gain practical experience so the book must cover enough of the research needed for the exam and hopefully will be clear and concise.. | |

| I haven't heard of many people that are MCSE certified and have little to no experience. "Paper MCSEs". But I guess it is possible. Sorry to burst your bubble. I'm not aware of any books that if you read you will be able to pass the exam. I've learned that even after going through Win2k Professional in classroom environment and coupling that with what I learn at home from using W2kP, the exam still isn't easy. Microsoft tests weren't designed to be really tricky and to make them impossible to pass, even though they may seem so, but to make sure that people with sufficient knowledge obtain their certifications. Don't get the wrong idea about making a bad purchase. MS Press books are excellent material, but I don't think they are sufficient enough to pass. Now if you use the right programs (ie transcenders, cheet-sheets) and use them the right way then you should be able to pass. I mean using them the right way by not just memorizing the answers. A lot of the questions that you see on transcenders are actual questions on the test. A lot of people think that this is the "answer" by just memorizing the questions and answers. But this only devalues the point of the certification. Transcenders are very expensive by the way, but they are an excellent learning tool. If you understand why an answer is the right one and why the others are not, then you shouldnt have much of a problem.
Basically what I'm saying is that the MS Press book that you have, coupled with the right program should give you the knowledge to pass the exam. But don't think that you will be able to pass overnight. Anways enough with the babbling. Sorry if I brought down your whole day. | |

| Another good thing is to talk to freak and visit his website. He has an unbelievable wealth of knowledge and will answer just about any question you can fire off at him. He's definately someone that should be looked up to and seeked if you need advice or answers. | |

| Microsoft explicitly says that you are expected to have at least one year of experience and that you will need other references 2-3 is recommended...even in there MOC the binder says you will need more than that class..I use MS press books, examcram by coriolis and misc web info...questions of day and examnotes, cramsession etc....good luck, dont worry about the experience..if you know the info and do not use any dumps, than someone will always at least give you a chance, also check with your local tech schools and community colleges, you can find info on internships or job placement....you will not start off with that 100K a year job, but you are at least in the biz and then it is up to you...MCSE takes a back seat to experience and hard work

| Thanks Slinky, Splauber. I'm just going to go out and get that exam cram book which seems to be pretty good. Just got to fill in some of the blanks that MSPress doesn't cover. More money, oh well it'll be very much worth it. thanx | |

| I always multiple sources, but Microsoft is always my number 1 source, be it through the MOC or the Microsoft Press. I love their stuff.
I also bought the exam cram, but it is to finish off
I agree that you should not start with the MCSE right off but should spend some time playing with the OS first, and all-around gaining more knowledge of the industry.
That is why I always recommend the A+, Net+ and Inet+ tracks before looking into the MCSE right off...
Let me know if I can help!

| Freak what is the A+ certification? Have seen a lot of A+ books but never payed any attention to them. | |
|
| the A+ certification is a product neutral exam developed by Comptia...the test covers the basic in and outs of hardware installation, how the computer works, how specific parts interact with others, troubleshooting...basic skills that you need before attempting to do anything with a computer...for more info check www.comptia.org website..im not freak but hope this answers your question..i would consider freak's advice about writing A+ and Net+ first...you may get MSCE without them, but writing them first will ease the pain of MSCE...believe me...best of luck

| I can say i have the MS Press kit books ( i got them free from my class) and they just confuse me more then ever. I went out and bought ExamCram books and I managed to pass the exam a few days ago. I found out only 3 people since my class in Aug. 2000, have taken the exam, and 2 failed (they both confessed to only studied the MS Press kit), thank god i gave up on that book! I would say, it's better to spend your money on other companys, besides MS. No offense MS! But this is my experience with them! Good luck in your search!
