| Before I tell you about the test, I want to say I am still really pissed at Cisco for making me take this test. To make a along story short, after I got my CCNP, I only needed to do 2 more tests to get the CCDP.. these were the CCDA exam and CID (640-025). This was mid summer… the CCDA exam had just changed, there was no material for the new test, so I decided to do the CID test first. I did that on June 30th. At that time there was STILL no book for the new CCDA exam, publisher said it won’t be until mid September. So I waited. In September the book came out and I picked it up. I read it off and on for about a month and was ready to take the CCDA. Cool!! I am going to get my CCDP…WRONG!!! Turns out Cisco went and invalidated the CID exam. What kind of crap is that? There was no book available until September but I had to complete all the requirements by September 1st in order to use the CID exam? I think this policy is ridiculous!! For the record I wrote to Cisco twice regarding this and I also called. They did not return my calls. They did not answer my emails. You can’t to talk directly to anybody regarding certifications so they can just ignore you. So under protest I had no choice but to write this ARCH test.
So how did I do it? I did this thanks to this group. There is no study material for the ARCH test. The only thing out there is to take the course. Well, you go spend the big bucks on that if you want. I wasn’t going to at this point.
I looked in this group and in one of the posts, somebody said he took the official course for ARCH at Global Knowledge and at this course he got a summary of the course in PDF form. He offered to email it out to people. A bunch of people asked for it and were posting their email addresses. I asked a couple of them to email me this summary and one did. I got lucky… I had something to study… it was just a point form document, but it was a start. I took a day and a half to go over it a couple of times. Then I found a place on the web that had practice questions to the ARCH exam. I can’t find that thread where that guy posted that he has that summary… I wonder if it was removed?
The other thing I must say is you should be doing the ARCH exam LAST. Some of the questions like which routing protocol to use are a piece of cake if you have done the routing course. And the switching course will help you with all the layer 2 questions. So do you CCNP first, then take the ARCH test.
I think that summary I got is not enough to pass this test… but that summary in combination with experience and practice questions I found are.
Any questions? | |

| Congrats!
Sounds like another odyssey on the design track. How costly would it be for them to sync up the study guides and exams a little better?
I can understand short-shrifting the less popular courses a little, but forcing this upgrade to a new exam while just coming out with the old study guide is really just a little bit special.

| Congrats Tinram.. Good for you, welcome to
the club. How did you find it?
Joe | |

| Just a note about the "pdf". I had found a URL on the Cisco site about SAFE that gave some detail of the Enterprise Composite model. I saved it as a PDF (as Cisco offers). When I offered the info to someone, I couldn't surf to the site on that day and offered to email the PDF.
I have since found the link again. Hopefully this public domain info is allowed on this forum.
Actually, when I preview this post, the URL doesn't show up correctly and goes 404 on me.
Anyway,
Go to www.cisco.com
in the search window, type SAFE
the first hit should be SAFE Blueprint - Introduction , click that
click the first option under whitepapers - SAFE: a Security Blueprint for Enterprise networks
a list of white papers will show up, pick the same name SAFE: a Security Blueprint for Enterprise Networks and you should have the document on screen, which you can save as a PDF.
| devlan 2003-11-07, 11:46 am |
| That SAFE paper was really helpful for CCDA, went deeper on Enterprise Composite Model than was needed but it was nice to get a clear picture.
The new Cisco Press Switching Exam Guide (by Hucaby) covers this nicely too.
Plus I just (for the first time) saw the CCDA book in Border's. That probably means they're getting ready to change the test.
| tinram 2003-11-07, 1:48 pm |
| Joe...
I didn't find this test to be much a challange overall. I think my experience with Cisco and Cisco testing was the biggest factor. Some parts were new, like I the VoIP stuff. That summary PDF helped me out on a few questions. I would never know how many VoIP phones you can have on a wireless Access Point if it wasn't for that PDF.
You are right that the SAFE whitepaper is a good resource too.
Still I think for people who are new to Cisco would never pass this without going to the course or waiting for a book to come out. Thats why I recomended people do this one last. If you can survive the routing exam, you can survive anything I think
I am just glad its over. | |

| Hi,
Is there any scenarios on the ARCH exam?
What are the topics that need to be really
concentrated on?
And finally, is the CID exam book any good
for the ARCH examination?
Thanks. | |
| tinram 2003-11-10, 8:53 am |
| Take the CID book and throw it in the nearest trash can. CID was a useless course to being with, and none of the tops are of use for this test. Like I said before, I know why Cisco got rid of the CID exam, but I just don't like the way they did it.
I had one "testlet" which consisted of a scenario and I had 3 questions about it. The scenario involved a company with 2 remote sites and you recomending changes based on their growth.
As for what to concentrate on, its hard to say. It depends on what you are weak on. I myself was weak on VoIP so I had to concentrate on that. I knew my stuff where routing protocols and wireless and storage are concerned. Come to think of it, I don't think I got a single question on storage.
There are 70 questions, thats a lot I think, so they hit many areas.

Can I get a copy of the PDF file?
Please send it to:

Thanks

| Congratulations tinram!
I also think the best strategy is to left ARCH as the last exam to take...
ARCH is the last exam I have to take, and as I don't have opportunity to take course, or to wait for the book I started to make my own materials, I found this ARCH course outlook very helpful (as subject reference):
http://www.knowledgenet.com/coursel...ses/arch_pf.jsp
I would be very grateful if you can send me PDF summary.
Thanks,

| To those who have passed the 642-871:
Will it be possible for you to provide a list of the materials you used in preparing.
Some of you have referred to some Cisco Press books but without the authors or the ISBN (Int'l Standard Book Number or the book ID) it's not possible to locate the these books.

Listen friend. I am really happy for you. But I need you to do me a favor and share the wealth. That PDF is the only thing I am missing to get my CCDP. I am in a career transition and I have 3 baby girls and a mortgage to support. I don't want to pay the lousy 795 dollars for the online thing. Can you do us all a favor and give it to the last poster at least, who offered to put it on FTP?

| I also failed yesterday after reading through the TK. Sigh...completed all the questions very fast, but not sure whether it was due to too fast, which cause me to miss some questions..anyway, i failed with 20 points less...:-(
tried both FTP site, but doesn't work. Can anyone send me the PDF file yangmin@ttni.com.sg ?
Thanks a lot! | |

| I used WSFTP to try to download the material from the ftp.networkunion.org, however, it seems that my ISP's DNS can't resolve it. Tried to do a WHOIS in the register.com and finds the Domain Server of networkunion.org. From there, do a nslookup to find the ftp.networkunion.org's IP is 218.1.71.186 . By using IP, it has no problem to download it. Now, i am downloading the 34MB file...hahah...It is great!
Thanks to everybody! Even CIT doesn't include this kind of "self troubleshooting" skills...^Q^

| With Ducnm's help, the extremely useful ARCH student guide, i passed today, although there were almost 50% new questions, which was not in the TK.
I just got the guide yesterday afternoon, so what i can do is to verify all the TK's answer, and i found there are at least 19 questions' answers have problem. If you trust TK 100%, the fate might be like my first attempt, although my first attempt should have passed if i didn't mistakenly skipped two small questions in the case study. It is first time to see that kind of format, didn't get used to it. :-)
Anyway, i think i still need to read through the Guide, and once the book is out, i will definitely purchase one and read through again.
This test is just for certification only!

| I've contacted cisco press and they say that their self study guide will not be released until the end of 2004!
I've tried the ftp site and it seems the password has been changed.
Very grateful if someone could mail on the pdf to me at jeff@upyaws.com.
Cheers | |

| You could try again. Just copy paste the password. Try to use one ftp client with passive ftp enabled. | |

| Hi,
I´ve tried to download the pdf file.
I used the ip address 218.1.71.186 and I had successful login, but then I only found garbage.
Can anyone post it for me in another place?
Thanks,
Pedro | |

| they are chinese charaters.
Just ignore them, and go to the root folder, then /upload folder, then /cisco folder, then /Design Cisco Network Service Architecture folder. Then you will find the pdf file.

| Hi nimgnay,
I've already did it with success yesterday. I´ve forgot to reply to the forum.
Nevertheless, thanks to all of you (ducnm, nimgnay, etc) that made this possible!

| Downloaded the 34MB file twice from the ftp site. Both times Adobe Reader and Full version complain the file is corrupt. Any suggestions, using smartftp in auto mode.

| I am going to agree with forbesl on this one... Your post shows exaxtly why you failed and the problem is between the keyboard and chair. | |

| Wow! I can see I may have been wrong about you and am a big enough man to admit it. My apologies. You'll get no more friction from me. We'll just agree to disagree on certain things, I guess. | |
|
| Congratulations on your test taking!!! I will be taking the ARCH this week. Can you please send me a copy of the pdf you found useful?
Thanks a bunch!

| Hi there guys, well like everyone else I am currently trying to complete the CCDA exam and proceeding on to the ARCH exam. I am curious to know where I can get a copy of the PDF that everyone is requesting, either an email @ alphaomega@yahoo.co.uk or a URL will be great. Well for now best of luck guys and lets hope that we can make something decent of Ciscos messy academic courses | |
