871: New ARCH versus Old CID

| Hi, I've seen some posts on 871 but not many have taken it. For most exams, even after they refresh the objectives you still see some old topics.
But this one is such a complete re-vamp (from CID) that I wonder can anyone tell me how much old tech there would be on it? Or is it entirely ECNM, AVVID, Management, Security, HA, QoS, multicast, VPN, WLAN, IPT, Storage, and Content.
Also, any prediction as to when there's an Exam Guide?
Thanks in advance.... | |

| Cisco Press is releasing "CCDA/CCDP Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack" FEB 24, 2004,ISBN# 1587201178.
There were some rumors that Cisco Press will release the ARCH study guide in this quarter, but I can't see it in their announcements, so it seems for sure that the book will not be out until mid April.

| Thanks Anastasia1
Anyone have insight on the first inquiry (old versus new etc.).
Regards. | |

| Well I answered my own question -- there's none of the old CID stuff on this. It's all new and quite relevant-seeming material, right in line with the objectives.
Unfortunately for me, I fell more than a tad short at 757 (need 776). I was certain I was en route to a record low score from about halfway through.
I tried to cram for this in two weeks using the famous PDF (which covered a lot of ground) and the Kaplan self test, but there were quite a few surprises. In general I got hurt on technolgies (I've cleared BSCI but not BSMSN). There was a lot of detail on specific net management tools, and it went a good bit deeper into IPT than these materials indicated. I took (what I thought were educated but were probably wild-assed) guesses on a couple of QoS and multicast questions and later verified the answers were nowhere to be found in my study cache. Speaking of caches, the content material was mostly high level, as was wireless and storage.
Folks with more product experience should be okay, but a beating is a beating, and I don't plan to try this again till I see what Cisco Press comes up with. Hope this helps any brethren/sistren also enjoying the odyssey of the design track.

| Devlan,
wish you more luck next time!
And thanks for your comments.
About study book, there were some bad rumours so I asked CiscoPress once again: "When do you plan to release the new study guide for CCDP ARCH exam (former CID)?" They answered me today: "Thank you for your inquiry. We currently have a title in production, CCDP Self-Study: Designing Cisco Network Architectures, which is not due to publish until November 2004". ....
It seems that we are condemned to other resources. But luckily we have this PDF!
I will have "close encounters of the third kind" for a few days and then will post my opinion about learning path...

| Hey, thanks for the update Anastasia. It certainly is cruddy news -- November. I was already of thinking of taking switching first before returning to this (especially as there is such an overlap of material) but that certainly clinches it.
I was thinking about this more (while licking my wounds) and perhaps the right rummage through CCO would be the best approach. For instance, there are some fairly detailed docs on call manager operation, the various network management tools, the product advisor etc. You might want to consider looking over any areas you feel weak in before trying the test -- the PDF (and for that matter the objectives list) is actually close to identifying the right topics, and fully covers the ECNM stuff.
Best of luck on it! |
