Author Case Studies for CCDA

First off, I want to thank the Mods of this board, and the majority of the posters, for keeping these boards clean and to the point!

I recently finished my CCNP and since I had some time till the next big project, I figured I will give the Design side (CCDA/DP) a go. It's only two exams, so I will probably meet my time frame. Anyway...

I went through the DCN book, and ALL of the case studies in it (found several mistakes, or points were the book assumes too much in their answers) but overall, thought of the example case studies are oversimplified!

Can someone that has passed (or taken and failed, knock on wood!!) comment on how comparable are the Case Studies on the exam with those in the DCN book?

How are they different, and how much more difficult are they?
Are they asking for more detailed answers on the exam, or is it more difficult to decypher the actual text describing the cases?

Thanx again, and if anyone needs help with anything up to CCNP (book recommendations, study methods, things to avoid, etc...) do not hesitate to ask.

I took the exam last week and like many others relied on DCN and CCDA Exam Cert Guide. Personally, I felt that both of these were excellent preparation but if it came down to recommending one of them it would have to be the latter.

The case studies in the DCN asked for much more detail than the exam, the exam cert guide was, I felt much closer and didn't make some of the assumptions which were made in the DCN answers.

I strongly recommend you getting the Exam cert guide as it features 8 or 9 new case studies which are close in style to the exam.

In the exam remember the answer is given to you - you just have to pick it out of a list, and as on all multi choice 2 answers are obviously wrong because they answer a completely different question!

Another top tip is to make lots of notes, they don't concentrate on one case study at a time, they jump through them through out the exam.

I've just started BCMSN, so maay take you up on the offer of help

Good luck.

Thanx for the input MatP.

In your post, you mention that the case studies on the DCN book were more difficult/complex than the ones on the Exam Guide. So I safely assume that if I am comfortable answering the Q (and decyphering the info given in the case studies) on the DCN book, I shouldn't have a problem with the test.

My technical background is NOT extensive, however preparing for both CCNA and CCNP (w/out braindumps etc that give a false sense of security) has given me the technical knowledge and helped me understand the concepts involved here, so I shoule be OK if the case studies do not 'do me in'!

I am to sit the CCDA this Monday comming, so I will post back with my take on the prefered preparation on this one.

OK, CCDA is history, so here is the shpill as I promised!

So you understand from what perspective I am talking, I read both Exam Guide and DCN (both by Cisco Press) and used the Bosons to glue everything together. That is almost always the case with my Cisco tests, it's been tried, and it works for me 100% so far!
(knock on wood! LOL)

One word: OVERKILL!

I was over-prepared for this exam by miles! Although I didn't score 1000 (never seen that number on my papers hehe) I had a lot of room to play, and about 40-45 mins to spare at the end.
So all of you stressing yourselves out (like I did) relax...
I am sure most people do bad on this exam because they go too fast, thinking that there is no time. THERE IS AMPLE TIME!

A lot of posts drawing our attention to the case studies are faulsely alarming.
I can honestly say, that on some of the Qs relating back to an individual Case Study in my test, I didn't evan have to read the case study (of course, in the begining, not knowing, I did read all of them, and took thorough notes) so many of those Qs are plain logic and common sense!

On the Qs not relating to the case studies, nothing was asked of me, that the previous CCNP material has not covered! So if it's your first test, read up on the fundamentals and all concepts on the syllable, else, if you have CCNA/P focus on how to be an effective note-taker, and on how to decypher case studies.

All and all a lesser test, by far the worst written English I have seen in my life, not preparing us for CID -or any other design track for that matter- (I want to hope that CID will be a serious test, and not another 100$ donation to Prometrics/VUE )

Oh! And one last thing...
People say that CCDA is more difficult than the CCNA, not by a mile!
More generic and w/out expectations on technical issues and specifications/regulations like that CCNA was.

Onwards and upwards to finishing my CCDP now...

Thank you all for your input, and for extending a patient ear to listen to my babble.
