2001-01-04, 3:20 pm

hi ccda forum
i am one cit away from ccnp status.
a few questions..

they say taking the cid will make you a ccdp...do u need ccda as a pre-requisite?

i have had many people tell me with ccna/ccnp knowledge one can just take the ccda ..how true is this? (booksellers and publishers and authors need not reply..ha ha !!)

mongol,

Have you checked out Cisco's web site? When it comes to requirements for certifications, I don't take ANYONES word. I ALWAYS check with the company to see what the latest requirements.

With that said though, As of the last time that I checked (last week)the requirements for CCDP are CCNA, CCDA, and then the tests unique to CCNP and CCDP. In other words, you need the 441 (CCDA) exam, and the CID exam in addition to your CCNP. (Your CCNP has the same requirments for routing, switching, remote access, etc.)

As for knowing the material. I wouldn't take the chance unless you have an extra $100. If I were you I'd at least get the Cisco CCDA exam study guide. There are lots of design consideration issues that are covered that you probably won't see in the CCNA or CCNP material.

Just my 2 cents. (take it for what it's worth)

Mongol,

I agree with Tom. I haven't taken the exam yet, but the study materials have about 30- 40% CCNA stuff. The designing of networks is a different animal, although there obviously is some commonality between CCNA and CCDA.

You will need the CCDA in order to achieve the CCDP.

The books I'm using are:

CCDA prep library (3 books) - ciscopress
Top-Down Network Design - ciscopress

Check at Amazon.com for reviews.
I like bookpool.com for prices on tech books.

Hope this helps

Certify,

Actually I was refering to the Cisco Press book by Bruno. To be totally honest, I have not seen Lammle's CCDA book, but I wasn't too impressed with his CCNA exam guide. I like the format better than Odem's book, but I thought he glossed over a lot of material. (Not bad if you're just trying to pass the exam, but not enough if you want to know your stuff inside and out). But to be fair I thought the 507 book was a major improvement over the 407 book. (I borrowed the 407 book from the library, and bought the 507 book)

My theory has been that the Cisco Press books are the "Official Course books" (Designing Cisco Networks - DCN) so they probably are the best source of information.
But getting information from other sources as backup is a good thing to do once you study the basics, or need a source to confirm stuff, or explain things that don't make sense from the first source.

Yea, your right about the "official" study guides, they are usually very very informative...to the point of being completely boring...lol....i like the Syngress book cus its got a LOT of info, and the guy who wrote it injects a lot of personal experiences into it also...makes it a bit lighter to read ya know? hehe someone should come out with a ccna, or ccda or mcse comic book ....lol....we need a superhero dammit!

Flint,

How about one better? My brother owns a video production company and I've been suggesting that he make some videos to compete with Todd Lammele's. If you've ever seen Todd's video they're pretty bad. No disrepect to him, but he's not exactly "eye candy" and his presentation is ok at best.

What I've suggested to my brother is to use this VERY VERY ATTRACTIVE blonde that I know to present the material. Nice EYE CANDY. Couple it with your idea of a character, and we might have a hit! (Maybe put her in a costume like Zena or Wonder Woman).
