I'm sure most of you will think this is a dumb question but i'll go ahead and ask anyways only because I can't find anything specific about this question online. I'm preparing for the BSCI exam and was doing the online labs at

http://www.ultratechnology.net/colu...erid=779279.htm

which is a great site. I was using the command r1(config)#ip host r2 192.168.10.1 192.168.20.1 192.168.30.1 and was wondering why bind all these ip address to the 1 name. I then noticed that all of the ip addresses are for each router interface but was still wondering how exactly does it work? I did some digging around and found that I can add a port number(default 23) and up to eight ip's to 1 name. Does the router try the first ip address entered first and then the second and so on? I would think it should only have the 1 ip address mapped to 1 name. Does anyone have a "real-world" example for a use for this that can help clarify things for me and others? Sorry for asking such a dumb question. LOL But it's been bugging me for a couple of days now.

I just learned something new for the day, thanks!

I agree with you on this being a little odd, 1 address is what you typically see being done. I suppose one of many possible real world scenario's where this would be useful would be telnet. If your main link went down on R2, you wouldn't have to go lookup it's backup link IP address in order to telnet in. Just type in telnet R2 and presumably your router would resort to the 2nd IP in the host list for R2. Have to try this in Boson's Netsim sometime.....
