I have a 1721 router and I want to add a WIC-1ENET or a WIC-4ESW. The thing is the upstream interface out to the internet will need to push out or accept 4 megs of data. The LAN interface, FE, will connect to a client switch. Just wondering if the 1721 is robust enough to handle this much data? If not, what is the max it can handle? and where can I find this info?

TIA

You can look on the cisco website for starters, but that 4 meg of data, over how much of a period of time are we talking about? A day, a minute? The 2600 is going to be a better router no doubt, so if you have one and its available, Id go with it. You need to look at how much data is going to cross it (not just the 4meg you are talking about (Internet traffic, remote site, etc)), how many people this is servicing, etc.

Here is a link on various models throughput in packets per second: http://www.cisco.com/asiapac/channe...performance.pdf

Take in consideration that this is raw switching performance, nothing else. If you add NAT, ACL's, encryption, etc. these numbers will fall off greatly.

Already checked the Cisco Website before posting. I was looking for specifics like what ZacDogg posted. I got the same info, pps, from Cisco's product catalog 12,000 pps at 64-byte packets, so am I correct in assuming 768K (12k x 64) is the maximum throughput (backplane) of the 1721 router?
4megs/sec is what I'm driving at. I want to put a WIC-1ENET for the WAN...

Not really. Cisco claims a max of 15Mbps of 3DES IPSec throughput. Can't find any hard numbers on clear text though. A 1721 can easily handle 4Mbps without even working up a sweat.

ZacDogg,

Can you link to where you found the 15 megs of encrypted data throughput? Just want to make sure I'm looking at the samething.

Here you go: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns340/ns394/ns171/netbr09186a00801f0a72.html
