| I'm studying for 642-801 BSCI. I'm trying to figure out what book to buy from Cisco Press.
CCNP Self-Study: BSCI
or
CCNP BSCI Exam Certification Guide
Also, what do you think about the Sybex book?
Thank You | |

| Cisco Press offers different materials for learning the materials, gaining experience, exam preparation, and exam practice. Go to http://www.ciscopress.com/markets/detail.asp?st=44727 to read about the self-study learning path and then click on the CCNP link.
Personally, I have the Exam Certification Guide books for the four exams, and I wish I had gotten the self-study books instead. I also have the four Sybex books. It's always good to get more than one perspective. | |

| Self-Study Guides, which are based on Cisco courses, provide essential foundation learning and thoroughly cover topics addressed in those courses. To be a truly useful self-study tool, these guides also contain additional information and detail wherever necessary. Book elements within the Self-Study Guide Series feature real-world case studies, configuration examples, and chapter-ending review questions.
Exam Certification Guides help prepare candidates for Cisco certification exams. These books assume readers have attained the necessary learning foundation and experience for a certification test and are reviewing material before exam time. They include a companion CD-ROM that contains a powerful testing engine that can be customized with practice exam questions and simulation-based questions, adaptable performance trackers, and the complete text in electronic format.

| I am glad to be back to the forums after a very long time and I would find more of me answering here!
As long as the BSCI exam is concerned I would reccommend the Catherine Paquet autheored one from Cisco press. THE best seller since 2001 for the old CCNP track as well as the current new track. Things are explained in a very crystal clear way with more of practical point-of-view and heaps of lab excercises moreover it has got everything what you would need for passing the exam be advised no need for any other resource.
These books listed below are what I was referring in all my earlier posting in this forum and elsewhere. You would need all the 4 books for your CCNP. They are in otherwords called "Student's manual" because most of the contents are just-cut-n-paste from the respective student manuals one reason could be that these guys would have had authored those manuals earlier. Remember about the student manuals, what you find in the student's manual is what you would get in the exams!
1. CCNP Self-Study: Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI) by Catherine Paquet, Diane Teare.
2. Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks by Karen Webb (Hardcover)
3. Building Cisco Remote Access Networks by Catherine Paquet, Cisco Systems Inc. (Textbook Binding)
4. Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting (The Cisco Press Certification and Training Series) by Laura Chappell (Editor)
Those who got the old edition here is the good news for your new IS-IS addition, go and search this forum for the posting I made on free download link at ciscopress.com

In a home lab you would need atleast 4-5 routers (aren't they $150 each at ebay?) with a decent switch like 2924 and the 1924EN will do for the worst.
Use them try doing all the lab portions found on the back of every chapter in the Paquet's book. Do not refer the answer part beforehand! ...You should be pretty much okay. Believe me I started from this book for the OSPF stuff for my CCIE.
Best of luck! | |
