Hi all,
I am studying for CCNP BCMSN and will be taking the exam next week. Have gone through all the content of the book and now practicing questions from BOSON. If anybody have advice on the content of the exam which chapter is more important than other, like those stuffs will be beneficial for revising me. Just want to know is there anybody preparing for BCMSN. Would be benificial if we could share the experience.
Thanks

i'm preparing for the BCMSN exams and hope to do it next week too. everyone in this forum seem to think reading the cisco book on switching is all u need. good luck in ur exams and any tiops frm u would be wellcomed, especially concerning the simulations

Thanks for the instant reply on my post. Now I am practicing questions from boson. It seems that I keep on forgoting the stuffs and there are great deal of information to grab. As part of simulations I have not done enough, well I have done all the cisco labs provided from the old book of the BCMSN and it was worth doing. I have heard that the simulation will be easy and there will be only few things to configure like vtp modes, pruning, vlan and such stuffs. But last time I have a bad experience on simulations question for BCRAN like the computer just stuck while doing the simulations. So i am planning to skip simulation if it will take long time and concentrate on the theory part only to keep up with time. If u have also any other idea or suggestions I will be happy to hear those stuffs.

Ram,

I give the sims 10 minutes a piece and move on if I'm not finished. For this exam I'd recommend you make some notecards.. you are right there is a lot of material to cover. If you need tips, please review my old posts (I made a good hint post right after taking the exam a couple of months ago and a lesser one a couple of weeks ago). I didn't use the Boson tests and instead just concentrated on memorizing the facts and understanding the concepts instead of messing with the labs. Everyone learns differently, but it worked for me. Good luck with the exam!

Agree with Necro. I had the password setup from Hucaby's book in my sim. But the bulk of the material as Necro says is the theory and thats all you need to know. KNOW THE HUCABY BOOK.

Here's what I was asked:

Sim:
1.Configure some interface with no trunking, apply vlan to the interface.

2.Setup password for enable, line console, vty. Vlan 1 only allowed for telnet.

Theory:

1. Whats the multicast all host address?

2. Nature of ISL encapsulation

3. VTP advertisement includes what?

4. Drag and drop: blocking, listening, learning, forwarding

5. Uplink fast: needs to be enabled on the entire switch

6. MST instance: #instance 1 vlan 1

7. CGMP messages: join and leave

that was realy informative,i was getting scared concernig the simulations and would have opted to skip them. but with ur post i guess it should be a walk in the park

Don't get too confident guys, its still a tough exam. However, it will test your knowledge of the theory behind the topics more than the implementation. So be sure to know the characteristics of the protocols, be able to compare and contrast the different trunking protocols, understand QOS features, know the theory behind EoMPLS, etc.. There is still a lot of memorization to be done, so I wouldn't call it a walk in the park. You all may feel differently, but I have never had an easy Cisco test.

thank u everyone for ur valuable contributions, i did bcmsn yesterday and one of the reasons i passed it was reading ur valuable posts
i had 69 questions and 2 simulations on password and vlans, and trunks.
pass mark remains 755.
pls i'll be interested in information concerning BCRAN, MATERIALS TO USE AND PASSMARK AND ANY OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION. thank u guys once again.
PS. BCMSN IS NO WALK IN THE PARK!

If I might add that I haven't taken any of these newer exams other than the the recertification, it has always been useful to read the CCIE level books...in this case the Cisco LAN Switching book is a great reference to help you understand the topics at a deeper level and will help you get a few extra questions correct. Passing the exam is not the only goal. Being a better tech/engineer is. If you understand even a portion of what you read (and you will) you will be that much further ahead of others applying for the same job.

Please also read the Doyle books on Routing TCP/IP for the routing exam. I can't recommend anything for Remote Access, because I did that thru experience, but those 3 books will also assist on the Support exam or whatever they call it now.

I passed what was called BCRAN by my ISDN experience....doubt I can't help much more as that is less and less necessary in real life... I sure know how to pick a winner... Me buddy Darth is much more qualified than I to assist.

Marathi is the Cisco press book by Brian Morgan And Craig Dennis any good? are u preparing for the BCRAN exam too?
I got BCRAN and CIT left
Hopefully BCRAN next, i have no ISP experience, but loads of experience on small to medium sized LANS
The aim is to be a better TECH/ENGINEER. i have a degree in Mech Engineering but have plenty of luv for IT (networking and communications) and intend to build a career in it.
SO guys i'll be needing all the help i can get from u PROS out there

bdbest - My take from those 2 epinions is that you need both the Ciscopress books on BCRAN - Atleast thats what I was planning to do.

Know frame relay, isdn, ddr, and nat. These are all on the test. There might be a similation where you have to set up nat on a router. Know cir on frame relay. Also you need to know access lists. This test is a lot harder than the switch test but it is passable. I do not know about the similators but anything you can use will help you. Good Luck.

thanks for ur timely advise. i'm sturding hard to pass the test. really wish i could get more information on the simulations.

Hey if I can do it anyone can. Just study hard and go to as many web sites that have info. Certification zone is a very good place. If you do not have the equipment you can rent a rack very inexpensive. Good luck!!

Passed CCNP BCMSN last week. Now is the time for BSCI. I wish I will get enough help for this exam too. Thanks to all.

Hey Sysopadmin - Did you find they ask you to do a lot more simulations and "Type the the command for ___" type of questions on the BCRAN compared to switching? Or is the BCRAN more theory-intensive like BCMSN?
bdbest

2004-07-06, 6:04 am

passed bcran last week there was no question that required u to type in commands. 2 simulations one on configuring modems and the other on configuring frame relay subinterfaces (point-to-point) there where lots of drag and drop type questions, and the others mostly theory. good luck

2004-07-06, 8:51 am

Terrific - Congratulations, bdbest!!! So what books / matrial did you use? Were the Boson tests any good for BCRAN?
bdbest

2004-07-06, 9:46 am

i used the cisco press book for bcran which was fair, i did not use boson test. the cisco press book did it for me. just study hard and u'll pass it

bdbest - Did they ask you to do the logical as well as physical modem config? MM
bdbest

2004-07-10, 5:47 am

for the modem sim i was asked to configure the modem both physical and logical ie both on the interface and line and also to telnet to the modem and issue an AT command and get the modem to respond with an ok.
marathi_mulgaa

2004-07-13, 11:40 pm

Flunked BCRAN. Giving it again next week. I have 2 questions that may appear dumb to you CLI jocks, but here goes:

1. How do you create subinterfaces on an interface s0/0? Do you type int s0.1/0 or do you type s0/0.1 ...or what?

2. telneting to a modem and issuing an at command - Is this what I should say:

# telnet <ip address of modem> <telnet port>
# at

Is there more I need to say here?
bdbest

2004-07-14, 5:28 am

had problem with the modem configuration too even when i did it the second time.
#telnet <loopback-interface-address> <telnet port>

going thru the chapter on modem configuration in the cisco press book on BCRAN could help also

the sub-interface command should be
s0/0.1
remember to state point-to-point or multipoint when configuring subinterfaces for frame-relay.

GOOD LUCK!

I finally found the modem thing in the "CCNP Practical Studies: Remote Access" book. Its not explicitly explained in either of the other textbooks.

For the subif thing, the simulator wouldn't allow me to use s0/0.1 point-to-point. I tried s0.1/0 and that worked, but then s0.2/0 wouldnt work. I got stuck in the pathetic position of knowing the config but just being unable to name the interface.

Anyways, here comes another attempt.

for the sim on subif configuration i'm sure it work once u get the syntax right good luck. i've got cit tomorrow

i did the cit test last week and fell short with 3 marks. there was a simulation on EIGRP/BGP with lost connectivity. guess it requied redistribution. whats a possible approach to this problem.
i retake the test soon. assistace required

I just passed the BCMSN last week at Cisco Networkers! I thought it was a very difficult test. It's hard to remember everything on there now that I thought was hard, but I just know there were things not in the Cisco Press book, nor the Cisco Press CCNP flash cards book. About half way thru, I thought I had failed it for sure, so just starting hurrying along so I could get it over. The second half of the test was a little easier. I ended up with a 873, so it wasn't even really close, but I really thought I had failed it. Good luck to all out there taking it!!

Congratulations CiscoGeek!

BDBest, you'd best post this question in a new forum if you want it to get attention - This is a 4-page long (and a little rambling) forum.

CiscoGeek92-

I've noticed most of the difficult questions are usually in the beginning of a test. They kind of slam you hard at first, so look for that next time you take a test.
