Author BSCI Materials

I've started reading the Sybex BSCI Study Guide book and so far, I think it sucks. I also have the Cisco Press BSCI Guide, so I think I'll read the Sybex book once through just to get a vague foundation, and then I'll use the Cisco Press book to really dig into the material and work on labs. Any other ideas or suggestions?

Ummm no explanation as to why it sucks? I have the Sybex book and the Cisco press book (latest one) and I by no means believe the book sucks. You will get MUCH MUCH more from the Cisco press book but it’s very very dry to me. I do feel that reading the Sybex book 1st and then studding off the Cisco press book is a good idea. As far as the labs go, both Sybex and Cisco have labs which need 8 or so routers. Would be nice to find some labs that are good for the BSCI and only need 3-6 routers and 1 switch.

In my opinion, the book sucks for the following reasons: The topics don't flow well. There's no natural progression or transition between different concepts, and some things are out of order. The authors reference alot of terms well before they cover them, so you'll see alot of "this will be explained in more detail later" type of statements. The authors also do not go into any detail beyond the scope of the exam objectives, so you will in no way be very competent with most of the materials covered in the book. In my opinion, it's merely an exam prep book, which I guess is okay if your main goal is to pass the BSCI with little in-depth knowledge. This, however; is not my goal. Anyway, it's just my opinion, not a definitive fact.

All Sybex books ONLY cover what is on the exam. I know you said before you used the Sybex book to study for the CCNA exam. The Sybex book only covered what was on the CCNA exam.

I dd see a lot of "don't worry we'll cover that later" parts.

How about the labs? Do you feel they are good enough?

Yes, the Sybex CCNA Study Guide was one of about four books that I used to study for the CCNA. Two were directly related to certification and two had no relation to certification. I also used sim software, testing software, and my home lab.

As far as the labs in the Sybex BSCI book, I do think that they are good. I also like the written review and the multiple choice review questions.
