Could some one give me a greater undear standing of layer 3 swicths' i know they work at layer 3 of the OSI model could i have more information please.

Hi,

basically routers normally do their calculations, etc, in memory which is slow whereas switches do it in hardware (special chips called ASICs) which is fast (almost wire speed).

So layer 3 switching is routing using hardware (ASICs) and runs hundreds of times faster than standard routing.

Layer 4 switching is the same thing but it switches (routes) on the TCP Port number rather than the IP address.

I'm sure a few people will jump in with add-ons but that's the simple version.
