| Sounds familiar. I have been so engrossed with work and studying for my CCSP that I almost forgot my CCNP was due to expire this month. At any rate, I took the 642-891 exam last week and passed with a rather disappointing 897 out of 1000.
I didn't put in any study time for the routing portion of the exam, but did read the latest Cisco Press BCMSN book by David Hucaby.
I felt the routing portion of the exam was pretty easy. Two sims, one on OSPF and one on NAT. Both were pretty basic, but be aware of the fact that the sim doesn't support the entire range of options available on the various ip nat commands. I got half way through and got the message that a particular command wasn't supported by the simulator. I finally came up with a result I felt would work and that the simulator liked, but it ate up a lot of time. Unfortunately the simulator wouldn't let me perform a sh ip nat translations, so I had no way to verify my config. I assume that Cisco wants you to configure NAT in accordance with their training material for 642-801 BSCI, which of course isn't available yet. Since I aced the design portion of the exam, I guess it worked O.K. Lots of questions on OSPF and BGP, a couple of which were fairly tricky in their wording. I only had a few basic questions on IS-IS and EIGRP, but then again I have no idea how big the question pool is for this exam.
For the switching portion I would recommend you be very familiar with VLAN operation and configuration. I am not sure I would have passed the switching portion of the exam without reading the book I mentioned previously. If you have worked with any layer 3 switches and are familiar with the basic IOS commands, that would be helpful as well. I only had one sim question in the switching portion of the exam. I don't remember the exact wording of the question, but it was a pretty basic IOS sim. The sims react very slowly to your input, as usual.
My weak point on the exam was in the troubleshooting area. I had to take a WAG at some of the various "how do you display this" type of questions. You might want to go over the various show commands in the mainline comand reference for 12.3, and the CLNS command reference. If I had done that, it would have helped my score.
I had 87 questions, and used up most of the available time on this one. I hate to advise anyone to take an exam cold, but if you are even close to being ready for the CCIE RS Lab, this one shouldn't pose any problem for you at all.

| 1 more question
did this also re-cert your ccdp ???
the exam outline says it's good for ccnp
and ccdp re-cert ? | |
| OHCCNP2003 2003-12-08, 12:31 pm |
| Yes it did. I just logged into certmanager to make sure and it shows that my ccnp and ccdp starting the recert process as of the date I passed the 642-891. | |

| Hey Darth,
I took it already too and it did recertify both my np/dp. You're already strong on your LAN stuff so you should be ok there. I don't remember having much BGP on mine, but I had 3 simulations. Most of the test was pretty basic but if it is on subjects you don't mess with often you should review. IS-IS and QOS come to mind for me.
Good luck to ya,

| Have any of you guys who passed 642-891 used Boson tests ?
Are they any good for 642-891?
(I found Boson tests useful and relevant for CCNP and CCDP exams three years ago.)
Thank you.

| yes I liked Boson 1 but not 2. The author of #1 was very responsive and has made many changes to his exam.

| Hey all, I also have to take the CCNP recert also but have been out of test mode for quite a while and have a general question. Does the test cover any Q's from the BCRAN or SUPPORT at all, or does it just cover routing and switching on the recert test?
What is the price of this test 642-891
Thanks in advance. | |

| Thanks for the info, Yankee.
Boson 1 will be.
And...oh, ...OHCCNP2003...
Thanks a lot for your posting.

| was it hard in the scope of preparing for ccie ????
i have to get off my lazy butt
pass the composite and re-take cciew .....

| no ... test is easier than the written was back when you and I took it. My only warning would be that you may be rusty at taking exams and remember what sort of piddly nonsense they may ask ya
Also it will probably be your first time seeing a simulator in an exam. Just read completely what they want you to do. What they ask is not that hard to do, just make sure you do it all.
