I have received a Cisco 2611XM which someone has been playing with that fails on bootup and goes into rommonitor mode. The display is as follows.

I think the guy has erased the flash - Can anyone confirm this???

Yup. Certainly looks like the flash is missing or corrupted. From what I can remember, if the flash is erased on a flash card, then really it only gets compressed - not really deleted. So it should be recoverable. Try doing a show flash command from the rommon prompt - do a ? to see what commands are available.

Other than that, if it is a flash card then get an IOS from somwehere and TFTP it to a working router.

Yes it looks like the flash is corrupted.

Also the default config reg value should be 0X4. Look for that.

I do not think you can run the TFTP when the router is in the rmon mode.

Try the X-Modem way of loading the IOS.

Look for the detailed procedures available in the Cisco site that tell you the ways of setting up an X-modem file transfer using your hyerterminal or terraterm etc...

Others....whats X-Modem file transfer?
Here you go...."rmon" mode is a mode a router defaults to when it fails to load the IOS from the flash. This could be due to many reasons to name few....unable to locate the IOS, wrong IOS versions, corrupted Flash or IOS, irrelevant config register values, etc...

In these situations the data ports would not be active. Running a TFTP server trying to load the IOS is not a good idea. Router somehow become a dead animal now. However remember your 'console' connection is still alive! You still got access to the dead animal! You can make use of this console. How?...just as simple as the X-Modem way!

You can now load the IOS into your router using the 'console port' at a speed of 9Kbps. It would be painful sometimes as it might take 1-3 hours to complete loading the IOS because of the low speed.

Hope this would help!

Thanks guys,

I received managed to x-modem the IP only IOS onto the router over the weekend and all is now OK. I've just got to post the router back down south to the client.

BTW. nice homepage Suresh

TFTPing the IOS into flash would have been the better idea (much quicker if you had a server available) as Hippo correctly suggested and yes it can be done from ROMMON.

Hippo has a good history here for sound advice!
