A site has an adsl router (Cisco 827). The connection would sporadically fail for days at a time. Every piece of physical (including router) was replaced,, but still same fault. ISP advised an upgrade to a more expensive service. The higher rate would guarantee the ISP would be accountable for outage. When the service was changed over, the circuit was brought back up but no carrier detect/link lights on the router. It was working before the change-over, so I called the linesman out. He connected and could surf using ADSL modem. I thought the adsl-router-interface may have been dodgy, so I grabbed a new one (again). No detect either, but the linesman could still surf the net. Neither router had a config, and no link light. The ISP linesman grabbed a router of his own a new 827 plugged into the line. It took ages to synchonise, but eventually did. I ended up "getting" a copy of his config. It was similar to mine - except that his IOS was ver 12.1 and mine was version 12.2. I copied his config into my router, and still no carrier detect. The line was up for several days, so I down-graded my IOS to 12.1 The original router, with the same config as the start came up instantly. Is there something between the two versions. I thought they would be backwardly compatable (or at least be able to perform the same function as the previous version). What's the deal?
