Any comments? I am just starting the CCNP. I am aware that I still need an ISDN sim, which I will get. Is the rest sufficient?

looks good, got pretty much everything cover.

it is a continuing process... you get new stuff, get rid of some older stuff etc etc...

you have a good foundation to build on, and in your first reading of the book in prepping for the exam, you will realize what you are missing and it won't be too late.

for example, that's a router lab, you are weak on switch. when you get to that, you can worry about which base on the reading of the book and tailor your budget/need base on that. When you get to trunking, then you kind of figure that you need a new router, 2600 being the cheapest etc etc... it is all a great learning process.

there is no need to have everything now... acquire them as you get to it.

and ya, isdn simulator. I personally rented a full day lab on that because I didnt want to pay 1000 for that... and also because I am relatively comfortable with ISDN technologies so I just needed to go through the labs to be sure and current... sleep well the day b4 and in 24 hours you can do enough labs till you are sick and bored of it. but I dunno hte market on it... you may be able to recoup all the cost for the sim, or most of it by selling it when you are done.

Thanks for the input. I bought it all at once because the price was right for a "package deal". Will the 2924XL be any help at all in studying for the BCMSN? What do you recommend as far as switches go? Thanks again for your thoughts.

XL are ios based.

honestly, I don't know what's in the new version of the exam... go look up the exam outline and figure out if they are focus on set base or ios switches...

CCIE have moved to IOS based switches, and the 2900 XL are a good stripped down alternative so it definitely has its value... but in the old swithc exam the focus was mainly based on set based swtiches (cat 5k etc)

If I were you, I won't worry. You got a good foundation and if it still focus on set based switches, you can worry about that then... now, just focus on your current targetted exam.

edit:

for the current beta switch exam.

*Implementation and Operation:
Convert CatOS to native IOS on Catalyst switches and manage native IOS images according to best practices
*

... interesting.

That's a great start. You may want to add a 2600 with 1 FE for ISL, a PIX 501 IPec/3DES (pretty affordable, UBR924 for VOIP and if you want to shoot the moon a 3550. A 8510 for ATM is a dream as it ranges for 2K-3K.

Good luck, you have what many wish they had. Cheers and have fun with your new toys.

Thanks...UBR924 eh. Why are those so cheap? ( not that it's bad thing ) Just curious! It seems to have a LOT of features for $50.00 on eBay.

Steeda,

Don't know, but they are a EOL product.
Do you mind if I asked what you paid for your toys?

I have a 2501,2502,2503,2520,Pix501 and a 1924C-EN (I got for free)and CheckPoint NG on one server. Still looking for a really cheap ($300) isnd simulator. 3550 and 2600 are just too expensive for me, right know. I have an idea about a cheap ATM solution, but I need to verify it.

enjoy.

Hi all,

A couple of questions from a new networker:
. What's the estimated price for that device list? How about the invest on the books?
. Do i have to get a CCNA first?

Thanks very much,
-Charlie

You need a CCNA to go for a CCNP. You don't need anything to go for a CCIE afaik, but it would be highly recommended to gauge your knowledge on the way up! I paid $2,699.00 cash for all that stuff, and the seller threw in a free octal cable, 8 DTE/DCE Xovers, a console kit, patch cables, tranceivers, et al. I found the stuff on eBay, but contacted the seller and asked him how much he would discount if I drove and picked up, and paid cash. He obliged me. Just buy the 4 Cisco Press CCNP books, should be enough. Anything else you can study on Cisco's website.
