I'm putting together a small home lab to get some hands on practice for the CCNP exams. Here's my shopping list:

2 x 2501 Routers
1 x 2520 Router
1 x 2511 Router
1 x 1912 Enterprise edition switch

I hardly see any 1912 switches on Ebay. Will a 1924 accomplish the same thing? Also am I missing anything?

Thanks.

1900 switches are almost considered scrap! No many bidders for 1900s at ebay. If you are lucky you would get for cheaper than $160-$180.

Instead you would need a 2924XL adds to the list. It support both ISL and dot1q trunking if you run a 12.0 version which needs min of 8Meg memory.

Thanks for the input. I'm new to the CCNP road and not sure what to get. I've decided to study the 640-604 first since my company is getting some new 4000 series switches. And this would be a great oppurtunity to learn from the CCIEs that are hooking everything up. I just needed my own equipment to mess around with, without worrying about screwing up the network. I'll see if I can work the 2924XL into my budget. Probably won't get everything at one time. 2 x 2501s and 1 2924XL first?

Hi,

I am also intersted in a CCNP lab and I have a few questions to ask :

I've been looking on ebay and it seems that the routers with 16/16 of memory are very popular but I was wondering what is the amount of memory I will really need if I need to set up a personal home lab when using BGP, OSPF, ISIS. I know BGP consume a lot of memory but I won't deal with giant routing table.

I am also wondering why 2520/2521 are known as "special for Frame relay" with 2 high density serial. Isn't it possible to set up a frame relay connection between 2 regular serial ? If it is possible, all cisco routers with a leat 3 connections (2 serial and 1 ethernet) are almost perfect to practise for the CCNP (I am not interested in TokenRing and ISND at the moment and hope never will be )?

So my plan at the moment is to find 5-6 "basic" routers like 2501 and a 2924 switch, is it a good plan (I am still BCMSN) and what is the amount of memory I need ?
And last minute question : is this lab ready for the new exams (NAT, VPN and xDSL ?) ?

yes you can use anything with 2 serial ports
as a frame relay switch.

the main benefit to a four port serial
as a frame relay switch is you can
create a hub and spoke topology.

Thanks a lot darthfeces, do you know the amount of memory I will need on each router running ospf, bgo, isis for a personal use ?

If you are still interested in a 1924, I have one for sale. $100 + actual shipping cost; no profit.

Hi,
Soon we might end up with adding a new cisco 3700 series multi access routers on your home labs as Cisco is going to introduce in their forthcoming CCIE labs worldwide from July 7th.
