| Hi all.
Happy new Year & all that good mumbo jumbo...I have a couple of questions for some of yall in here...If anyone knows or has any info asto this test can you please post it here...
I am looking into getting the cisco press book as noted below....
Cisco(R) Secure PIX(R) Firewalls
by David W. Chapman Jr., Andy Fox
ISBN: 1587050358; 1st edition (December 18, 2001)
I have read some good reviews & some bad reviews asto this book. Can someone shed any light if they have taken this exam or the MCNS one..I am currently reading the MCNS book & am curious if purchasing this book will be a good thing to do for the CSPFA exam.
In addtion can anyone elaborate on what all to expect on the exam & i dont mean as what questions will be there.....I am curious asto what to look forward to. Are there certain areas i will need to concentrate on or just read the whole book...
Thanks in addtion for any info.

| I've taken and passed the CSPFA exam this past summer using this book. I thought, overall, that it was a decent enough book (I read it 3x). It sure doesn't cover all that's necessary to pass this exam though. So, don't use this book alone thinking it will be enough. This exam questions more than your knowledge of the PIX commands, etc. It questions a lot about VPN's, CSIDS, and MCNS. I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was, but still managed to pass. If you have the other books (MCNS, CSIDS, CSVPN), I recommend taking a good look at those before taking your PIX exam.

| Just out of cusriosity, Subnet_zero, did you have experience with a PIX before attempting the exam? Could you tell me the pass mark? Thanks heaps for your advice. I will be attempting the exam soon as well.

| Keyburt,
I passed the CSPFA exam late Sept. '02 and the needed mark to pass was 751. It seems like a low score to pass, but I was surprised at the toughness of the exam. I own a small service company and have experience putting in some PIX's for small companies. Although this experience was of some help in answering some of the PIX questions, there were a lot of questions that dealt with issues bigger than the PIX alone. If I had to do it again, I would have read the CSIDS, MCNS & CSVPN a little more in detail to get a better score. I found that these other books covered topics that I was lacking when I took the exam. Be as prepared as you can by at least reading these books lightly and you should do ok.
Good luck when you're ready for the exam.

| Trust me I just used the Cisco press MCNS book by Mike Wenstrom and couple of PIX documents to get passsed the new CSPFA 3.0 exam. IMHO, It wasn't that hard. | |

| Does the book cover all the topics on v3.0. I believe a new edition will be coming out in March that will help us better prepare for the new version of the exams (mcns 640-100, pix 9e0-111 etc..) | |

| Just thought of mentioning a point here as I thouhg worht making it here...some of you might be aware of it.
The new MCNS ver 3.0 exam covers ONLY the firewall features of IOS whereas the CSPFA covers the full extent of PIX firewall. In otherwaords MCNS does not cover PIX and CSPFA does not talk about ISO features like CBAC, Reflexive ACLs, CET etc.
The current edition of Michale Wenstrom covers both these areas in addition to the CSIDS as well as CSVPN. So wait for the new edition. |
