| Hi guys
if a serial port is setup as a dce (i.e with clockrate) i have observed that when you use the sh run command with a cable connected to that interface that the clockrate will not show on the result.
Does anyone know the reason

| Hi
Is it a real router or a simulator? I had the same problem when I used the router simulator.

| hi,
in reply to what the last guy wrote it is a real router, and without the cable if you use the sh run command the clockrate will show, but with a cable on the serial interface the clockrate will no longer come up
thanks

| Ok, guys, I give up! I leave it to real experts in Cisco. (I am just a learner in Cisco stuff) | |

| maybe you hooked up a DTE cable instead of a DCE to the interface. Never done that before so I'm not sure if it will cause your problem.

| Verified a dte cable will make clockrate not show in running. Attach a DCE and the command returns.

| Hi guys
On checking the other end of the cable i.e. the end not connected to the router serial interface, it is stated as a DTE (v.36)
but the end coming to the router is a male interface, with the serial port on the router being a female, which i thought would indicate that it is a dce interface.
but if there is an interface cable that specifies dce please inform me
thanks

| As a general rule of thumb, Cisco specific cables are designated similar to this:
CAB-X21FC >>> Female dCe
CAB-X21MT >>> Male dTe
See the connection there.
For full cable specs, have a look at this link from Cisco:
http://cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc..._c1.htm#xtocid2
If you can't reach that link, let me know cos I went in with my CCO login. You may be able to download the PDF document alongside it.

| hello guys
An interface is never a DCE or a DTE, it is always a DTE.
we are only using a DCE cable, when we need it.
sh controllers serial 0,1,2 will show the type of cable attached.

| A DCE is usually a Central Office device, but in a lab environment a router can be a DCE. You set the clockrate on this router and the DTE has to be configured whatever the DCE is set to. Show controller s 1/0 would usually show the clockrate set on a interface. Remeber to have a space between clockrate when you enter the command. (clock rate 128000) |
