Starting my CCNP track today actually. My CCNA runs out in 1 year and 5 months.

Is the CCNA automatically renewed if you pass any of the CCNP exams? I am starting with the BCMSN exam. I am going to take the 4 seperate exams. I figure the tests might go into a little more detail on each unit and I want to make sure I learn as much as possible.

I am going to use the new Cisco Press BCMSN book that just came out. It seems pretty decent and I had good luck with the Cisco Press CCNA books. I've been told that BCMSN is one of the harder exams so that is why I thought I would start with it. Anyone successfully passed this one without delving into any of the other exams for ccnp?

Anyone taken the BCMSN exam and just used the cisco press book? I'm looking forward to taking the new exams and then hopefully can give some insight on study materials etc once I achieve it.

If I remember right, you have to finish the CCNP to auto-renew your CCNA.

As for the BCMSN, the cisco press book i have, which is a couple of years old(i took it a couple of years ago), wasn't very informative i believe. In fact, recently i looked in it for some refreshers on STP and had to consult my Sybex book instead because the cisco press just wasn't very in depth.

Now there is another cisco press book on LAN switching, at the CCIE level, which is supposed to be great.

Actually, you only need to pass one of the four CCNP exams (with a 642 prefix) to renew your CCNA. You don't have to complete all four tests. Check this page out:

I just passed my 642-811 the other day 893/1000. For how hard it is it depends on what you are use to seeing. Like someone said previous if you work around switches the questions could be common sense for you.

Of course being called the switching exam there were alot of vlan, trunking, and vtp questions. A few on Standby and QOS. The study materials I used were ciscopress 642-811 and books from globalknowledge. You should be fine with just the ciscopress.

One down Three to go.

I have 2 1912 switches that were bought cheaply on ebay. Are these good enought o get me through the new switching exam. Im funding this myself so I am on a tight budget regarding Equipment. I've tried the simulators but they dont dont go deep enough. Do I have to buy a 2900 switch????

i used the 2950 and 3500xl which worked very well for me. Dont think the 1900 will work very well. They have a different ios then the one on the exam.
