I have a cisco 7200 series VXR, with one 34Mbps serial card, and two FE interfaces. But only one is used.

Recently, my FE always down. Down in terms of : 1. I can't ping the FE interface.
2. No traffic can pass thru, so, all data transfer to internet is down.

But when i show int fa0/0
Displayed: Adminstrative and Line protocol are both up.

Could someone help me with this? Thanks.
If you need any data or configuration from me, I would paste to you.

You may want to check Cisco's web site for any bugs with the IOS. We have had a couple routers that would do the same thing. What we discovered was a bug in the IOS that would make the interface go to sleep.

Spanning tree ???

Spanning tree would be if it was a switch.

Have you tried
- reseting the interface?
- use the other fast ethernet interface (maybe a hardware fault?)
-rebooting the router (drastic I know but it does fix some things)

What changes, if any, were made to the router before this happened? this did work before right?

actually you're wrong
the serial is the outside and 2 fe on the inside.

i really hope if he's got a 7200vxr
he can afford a switch ?

whether he is plugging into a hub (stupid).
or a switch there is a layer2 bridging process on ethernet.
otherwise how can you have a loop-free
topology ?
it very well could be a spanning tree problem.
what's on the other side of your ethernet int ?

Hi all,
The FE is actually connected to a packetshaper "outside" port. While the "inside" port of the packetshaper is connected to my Layer 3 switch.
Everytime this thing happens, I have to telnet into the serial and reset the FE interface. It happened again yesterday, so I did some isolation test. I could ping to the packetshaper but not the rest of inside.
So, i reset my packetshaper and it works again. Before this, we used to shut then no shut the FE.
Any idea?

have you tried packetshaper support ???
how about removing packetshaper from the equation and see if it happens.
has it always done this
or when did the problem start ???
place a sniffer on the outside and inside
of the packet thingy.
what's the arp-cache look like when this is happening ?
it could even be a spanning tree problem between the pactetthingy and the switch.

I like Darth's idea of removing that packetthingy from the equation. My gut says the problem goes away at that point. Seems to be frequent enough that you won't have to leave out more than a couple of days.

packeteer has a support forum
i've seen topics posted there that are similar. you can get help specific to that device
