| Hi,
I just got promoted at work and I need to do my CCNP in 4 months. I am a CCNA that has no job experience and that got certified 7 months ago. I will have access to all the cisco equipment I need to practice.
I'd like to know what my approach should be. There are 4 exams so I thought 1 per month. I want to know what books I should use and what additional gear too.
Thanks.

| it might just be me, but most people go against the way cisco put the order of the exams. advanced routing(bscn) and remote access(bcran) go hand and hand. and u have to have switching and he other two before u can take the troubleshooting exam. so i would go in the exact order cisco placs them. but beware BSCN is very complex and hard, take your time with the first one and then the restshould go smoothely, just my advice, but i dont have my CCNP yet so what do i know lol | |

| I feel 4 months is plenty of time to get CCNP. 1 exam a month is just fine if you already have some hands on experience with this gear. You jsut have to set your mind to it. The material is logical in design and straight forward. I think there is just a psychological barrier you need to get over. Just put your mind to the job!
My route was:
switching
remote access
support
routing (BSCI)
It's a route i would recommend, but then otherw would recommend the more traditional:
routing
switching
remote access
support
Up to you which way you go.
Best of luck!

| I suggest the Cisco Press books. Some people like the Sybex books. If you can understand what Cisco is trying to say, they are just fine. Besides they're Cisco's tests! Sybex doesn't write the tests. As you can see I have some hatred towards Sybex. Because he doesn't know how to word things very good. At least in the Advanced Routing book (BSCI). I'll will never get one of those books ever again. Unless of course if Sybex starts writing the tests.
Good luck on your journey. And a journey it will be. Maybee you should not take the BSCI exam first...... there is a lot of material to learn and understand.

| Yep I agree. Only go with Cisco Press books for cisco exams. I myself have tried to stay clear away from Sybex books. I once bought the CCNA sybex book, and over time I disliked it to the bone. Then i picked up the ICND book and saw new light! Also once bought the sql7admin sybex book. That volume had so many errors in it that i just threw it aside and used the microsoft press book instead. Even though the cisco press books contain errors (as do all other books) I would just go with Cisco Press for the overall quality of matierial and logical insight into the subject matter!
cheers,

| I only hope you don't work at the same company I work for or any companies I do business with. 4 months with no hands on experience is ludicrous to say the least. Memorizing test questions will not get you very far in the real world................ | |

| Anyone tried this path: Foundations -> Support?
I think it is the way to go if you want to earn you ccnp in a record time.
I find that Sybex books are more basic and succint, while cisco press are more in-depth.
Using both will bring more value and speed up your assimilation of the various topics. | |

| hey boy
just stop planning and take the BSCI exam , it will take u two months to be comfortable enough to write the exam.
rest will follow soon, 4 months is quite good enough.
buy all the books, investing in books is not bad, i buy cisco press and also sybex .
all the best | |

| i would suggest going to half.com to find good books and good prices and buy cisco press since cisco does make the exam, makes more sense. | |

| Riverwind6 i am approaching a similar situation myself. I have not planned to take the exams yet but i am making a first pass at the cisco press books just now.
I am finding the material easy to read. As someone said further up just immerse yourself in the material and all will be fine. 4 months is plenty of time imho.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress |
