Author broadcasts from server that is trunked

Guys, I was thinking about VLANs and trunking and it doesnt seem wise to me that you should trunk to a server because the server nic could screw up and send broadcasts out. If that is the case, since it is over a trunk link, wouldnt it broadcast to all VLANs, therefore creating a broadcast storm across all VLANs?

Trunk to a server????? very funny. This question WAS a joke.... right????

Marathoner may want to look at this, an 802.1Q nic which can be placed in a server:-

I believe I have a few customers using these, so I guess it's not even that unusual.

I'd never looked at it that way, I guess the answer would be yes, it possibly could cause a broadcast storm.

You better work a little harder on that CCNP marathoner. Thanks MatP for the info on 3com. Im not sure if it works like when a server does broadcast, if it goes to all VLANs or defaults to VLAN1. Anyone know?

Yep that kinda stuff is in use with the thought being that all users need to reach that server, maybe for mail or login, so it will have multiple IPs and live on all the VLANs on that trunk. With this sort of set up all users make it directly to the server without being routed.

Broadcast storms are caused by loops. This would not be a concern here.

just thinkin how would a server nic know ISL or 802.1Q in the first place... (Didn't know about the 3comm nic -- that's a nice tidbit to file away...) but then even if it did, why would it cause a broadcast storm any more than any other trunked device.

I've figured out the best way to learn stuff on these forums is to make some kind of strong assertion that you don't mind having blown away. Asking questions is not as effective.

its the only way u can make a server a member of more than one VLANs....
one server will not create broadcast storms
sure u can manually decide the VLANS the server would be a member of

Well Yankee, My initial thought on the NIC broadcasting was that I have seen in the past with a sniffer regular NICs that all they were doing was sending out a broadcasts. That is what I meant by screwed up. Sorry I didnt make that clear. I agree with you about the multiple paths thing.
Marathoner, I dont make strong assertions that I mind having blown away. That was a serious question that, since I do know that you can trunk to a server, I wanted to share with the group to get a response from. You just got corrected by MatP and therefore showed to everyone else that you DO NOT know what you are talking about. "Trunk to a server????? very funny. This question WAS a joke.... right????" That looks like you are trying to make me look foolish, when you only made yourself look foolish. Next time you decide to "blow me away", you should read up on the subject first.

for an interface to participate in isl
or 8021q trunking it simply has to support the reading and modifying of frame tags in hardware and software.

for instance any ethernet interface on a 3524/48 xl can be trunked

router on a stick is another example

an ethernet interface installed in a server
providing this ability would work.
