| You could try from a pc that you may have telnetted from this command in dos: arp -a
That might jog your memory. | |

| Your computer don't know the mac address of a switch unless you manage the switch from the PC. But to manage the switch from the PC you need to know its IP address . So there is no way to get the IP address in the arp cache in this case I think.
Maybe you can try Active Network Monitor from www.ntutility.com. This sotware can find all the IP addresses in your LAN but I am not sure if it can also find the IP address of a switch.
Edit : OR maybe this one will work but again I am really not sure, give it a try : LANSAN Network Monitor http://www.lanscan.com/.
As the only messages coming from a switch are the spanning informations & co and because the are multicasted, I think that it might difficult to find the IP address.
Edit 2 : I just thought of a way to find its IP address, connect your switch directly to a computer where a Sniffer is running, then power off and power on the switch -> you should see multicast frames going out of the switch if spanning tree is not disabled. You will find by this way 23 bits of your IP address because they are in the multicast frame (I hope). |
