Hey guys,

This is somewhat a stupid question, a rookie one that I should know but unfortunately I don't know...

I've been configuring my router without a problem. At last I save the configuration using the "copy run start" command to save the configuration to "start-up" memory. When I turn the switch off and back on again, for some reasons I lost all my configuration.

Can anyone advise what I should do? Every time I boot up my router, the router asks me to begin the initial configuration dialog... this is somewhat frustrating because I end up losing all my configuration.

Please advise. Please.

thanks,
Yankee

do a "sh ver" and see what your config-register is set to. Probably need to change it to 0x2102 in the config mode.

The router has 0x2142 config-reg. How do I change this number to 0x2142? Thanks,

Use the "config-register" command in global config.

Your lovely config was not lost. You just had your router set to not use it.

Here is the page I made to help my mates with this after spending a couple hours going through exactly what you describe.

We even had the cisco pw recovery page open while we were doing it, we were just a pack of drooling idiots who were in such a hurry to get onto something more interesting that we all just assumed that the other people had grokked the doc...the danger of working in groups

It is a mistake I will NEVER repeat as long as I live, that's the ONE good thing about learning things the hard way.

Hi,
I faced with the same kind of problem with one of my 2501, the start up config never gets retained upon power-cycle the router.

I just flipped the cisco site and did a trick...they actually referred this for a RSM switch. While your router boots up...hit the ctrl+break key to get into the RMON mode (actually '>' prompt in 2501) and change the config reg value as 0x10F.

Now restart the router. Now get into the config t mode change the reg value back as 0x2102.

It should be okay upon another power cycle now.

It really worked for me.
