Is there a way to run 2 one-gig full-duplex lines between 2 cisco switches, and have a collective or aggregated bandwidth of 2 gig? Typically the spanning tree protocol would define this as a loop and not allow it, keeping one of the lines active and one for backup if the other fails. Is there a port setting to allow binding of both cables to create a 2-gig throughput? If anyone knows and can point me toward some online documentation, i'd be much obliged.

Other than etherchannel, I have to say to use some sort of layer 3 load balance, are you running eigrp in your network??

Thanks, I'll look into etherchannel. We're actually all static here and don't send router updates.
