Hello,

I recently upgraded the flash memory on my CPA 2511 router to 16 MB. I now receive the following message whenever I reload the machine:

%Error: System flash bank 0 chip 0 unknown, chip id 0x9155 (reversed = 0x89AA)

%Error: System flash bank 0 chip 1 unknown, chip id 0x9155 (reversed = 0x89AA)

%Error: System flash bank 0 chip 2 unknown, chip id 0x9155 (reversed = 0x89AA)

%Error: System flash bank 0 chip 3 unknown, chip id 0x9155 (reversed = 0x89AA)

%Error: System flash initialization failed

I purchased the flash memory off ebay. Please tell me what is wrong. I have searched CCO but to no avail. Thanx

Your bootrom chip might not be able to handle the ram.
When I upgraded my 2514 I had an alike problem

Both Flash and Memory must be upgraded to 16 MB. If they are 16 MB, be sure they are seated properly.

I do Failure Analysis on various Cisco Routers and switches, troubleshooting to the component level, and hardware/software issues. That error can be caused by either: Defective Flash Memory Module, Old IOS will not support a 16M flash, or EEPROM chip is old and needs to be reflashed with a new bootprom version, check when this router was deployed in the field by the year during bootup. Check these troubleshooting tips and let me know if I can be any assistance.
