2502 Router and Ethernet LAN
|
|

| Hi all,
I just got a 2502 router free for my home LAN but it looks like it won't be of any use as my network is all Ethernet. But as some of you might know already, the only LAN interface on this router is Token Ring.
I'm wondering if there is any device such as a tranceiver, converter,...alike that could convert Ethernet frames into Token Ring frames and vice versa so I could use this router on my network.
I know the 2513 is the appropriate router for this kind of environment as it has both the Ethernet and Token Ring LAN interfaces but I can't find any and even if I do, can I afford it?
I also know that I could set up a multi-homed machine with both Ethernet and Token Ring cards in it and that will work like a 2513 router but I'm not sure if I could afford that either.
This is why I'd like to check with you all to see if anyone knows or has heard of any Data Link Layer (Layer 2) device that would take care of converting Ethernet and Token Ring frames.
Thanks. | |

| You can still use the Serial connection and the Aux to communicate with the rest of your lan.
MAU (RJ45 UTP) Usually go for 10-20 on ebay.
Token is cheaper these days on ebay.
I built my whole lab on Token Ring except for the 2522, 2501, and a 1912 Switch.
I have 3-3502's, 2510, and 2-2525's.
But I also have 5 AGS's and 6 IGS (All do ethernet and 2-CS500's.
Need an AGS or a CS500 Terminal Server, i can trade...
My AGS's are loaded and make great frame switches.
The CS500's are excellent replacements for the 2509/2511's

| Token Ring is one type of LAN and Ethernet is another. There are any converter. | |

| Sukuvi has just raised a very good idea, lets see when such converter is being designed and by who? I hope it will be one of us. | |

| How many pins AGS serial port has? What cable is require for back to back with a 2500? Does it use 2500 series IOS? | |

| Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the different ideas that you have submitted.
Comblues, I'm not familiar with the devices AGS, the IGS or the CS500. Could you please post brief description and I guess that would answer Jane55's question, thanks.
Mat P, thanks for the eBay link. I'm going to watch that blackbox very closely and see if I can afford it by the time bidding on it ends. And as King_ram said, I thought I might read something it too however I wasn't sure so I said to myself maybe I was just dreaming, this why I posted it.
Kalejaiye, you might be right. By designing networks and connecting devices, we will one day get to the point where we will design the devices ourselves. | |

| CS 500's are either 508 or 516
They are Terminal Servers and are functionally equivalent to 2509/2510/2511/2512 Routers.
Except that they are accesses via Telnet (ethernet port) and do not have any serial or aux interfaces.
The good part is that each reverse telnet interface happens to be RJ45.
AGS - These are the workhorses of the Internet up till about 1996.
They have 16mb Ram 4mb Flash usually and have a plethora of interfaces.
Lots of Serial, Ethernet, Token Ring.
I even have one that has 12 V.35 interfaces (female) as well 8 ethernet connections.
These make great frame switches or scnarios for BGP where you want to use Confederations in a Broadcast medium like Ethernet.
Next we have the IGS Router.
These are the predecessor to the 2500 series routers.
They run IOS up to 10.20 I believe and are capable of most protocols including BGP.
There are some caveats due to not being the 12.1 or 12.2 for the current CCIE Lab.
But they are great for IOS practice at the CCNA/CCNP Level of for use as edge/access level routers where you need only one ethernet or serial interface.
Remember the Netwokers 2000 Seminars for the CCIE Lab that says that one can practice nearly 80% of the CCIE LAB on as little as 2 25xx series routers.
If you look carefully is is true.
Enjoy! | |

| I'm sad to inform you all that I was outbid on the eBay Blackbox that I wanted to get. I didn't have enough time to rebid otherwise I would have used the proxy bid and enter 250.00. The winner got it for $102.50 so I envy him/her.
I'm new to bidding on eBay so I lost but I learned a few things about the tricks of bidding.
Anyway I hope I'll find a used one to buy soon, as I can't afford a new one.
If anyone finds one somewhere, please let me know so I could go for it.
Thanks to everyone and Good Luck. |
