binary is base 2 and hex is base 16. take groups of 4 binary digits and determine decimal value. for example, 0100 is 4 in decimal and 4 in hex. 1100 is 12 in decimal and C in hex. If you are using windows, the calculator has a converter to go between bin, hex, dec, and oct.

hey.....i know the 16 base. 1-9 and after that a-f so 10 is a and 15 is f....i am just confused about other nos. after 15.....i think we have to convert them to binary first and then work it out. i just havent been able to figure it out.

whatever the number you have in binary, break it into niblets. A niblet is 4 bits. You mentioned numbers greater than 15. How about 1500 for example. This would give you 10111011100 on a calculator. (Don't forget the leading zero). So the niblets for this would be 0101 1101 1100. This would then be converted to 5DC.

I was really worried about the binary to HEX conversion but just did the switching exam today and there was only 2 out of 79 questions refering to this. There were alot of questions on other aspects of multicast though like CGMP, IGMPv1 and 2 and PIM etc.

One the multicast mathmatical conversions was a gimmie as 2 out of the 4 answers didn't start with 01-00-5e ! and the 3rd was so obviously wrong you could tell by converting Hex to Decimal.

Have any others recently took the test and had more than a couple of actual multicast math questions.

hey thanks guys. i think breakin down the binary into 2 groups of 4 worked well for me i think i have got it now.
also i went thru the calc. on windows...pity i didnt know the calc had a scientific version too. i kept makin on nos. and confirmed the answers..so that was good.
switchin on monday !!!!! here i come.
