How to setup a tftp server by using PC/Laptop?

| I am thinking of setting up a tftp server by using pc or notebook in order to backup my IOS Flash Image but I don't know how to do it. Please enlighten me. Thanks a lot. | |

| Download a tftp server and install it on your laptop.
Set your network settings to match the sub-net of a network on which
your router or switch resides and make an active ethernet connection to it (via switch
port or hub).
Make a active console connection to the cisco device and enter the
priveledged mode.
Open the tftp server on your lap top. Leave it open on the desk top.
Ping from the Cisco device to the lap top to confirm connectivity.
From (router)# type: copy flash tftp.
Fill in the command queries that follow with the appropriate
information. (Depending on which OS you are using you may have
to copy the file name of the flash file in the command queries or
it may default to it.) Yes to everything...
It's all over but the shouting. Stand back and watch the fun.
I'm wondering how a CCNA could not know this? There were at least
three tftp questions on my test. | |

| j3b we usually help everybody here who asks questions no matter if that question is at the level of CCNA or CCIE . And if we will help him we will not ask him that you have ccnp certificate then why you are asking questions of CCNP level itself or questions about CCNA so may be that person can feel shame or something like that . So why to make him feel like this ? Just trying to make you understand . I hope so you did not mind it .

The TFTP server does not have to be on the same subnet in which the router resides "is that what your saying?"
just plug in the IP of the tftp server, it doesn`t matter where it is at as long as it has a clear path. | |

| Chodan is right. As long as you can verify connectivity from the tftp server to the router it will work. I wanted to make it clear that you needed a network connection as well as a console connection for the method I was describing. I didn't want linkteo to miss that. The first time I tried it I didn't have a network connection and couldn't figure out what the problem was. After about an hour, I took off my big shoes and red nose and re-read the directions and did it right; it worked.
You can also up- and download via the console connection using X-modem or Y-modem protocols, but it is cumbersome to set up and very slow.

| You do not need a "console connection" to use tftp to copy images and configs to and from a router. I do it daily and hardly ever have a console connection! | |

| I like the FREE tftp server from http://solarwinds.net
Its pretty good and allows security features like:
Send and receive
recieve or send only
(so nobody snoops your config's)
only allow certain IP connect
They have other FREE tools there too.
Does Cisco still give away their TFTP server?
They used too, but I think that's in the past.

| That is ok. Of course I know how to backup IOS. I used Sybex to prepare for my CCNA but the book only taught me how to backup IOS and the book never tell me how to setup tftp server. That is why I posted this question. I have already figured out how to do it before I read your reply. Anyway, thanks for your detailed guide! |
