Hi skyelsangi ,

while, let me tell you something about myself, i have been working in this industry for five years, working position range from system engineer, technical support engineer and my current job...system administrator.
Doing all range of works, from network, system, servers, end user support, and others. Quite a good exposure to me for the past five years.

Regarding your questions, let me ask you something, which area do yo plan to go into. Networking ,database, system administration or others. From what you told me, you are working in a company providing lan and wan solution, that's good. And you got your CCNA, and you plan to further it to CCNP. That's even better. Coz, now, you got the environment you can work with. And in long terms, you will be as good as a IT professional.

Regarding the firewall.I not too sure, about your country. For my side, most of the companies are using checkpoint. And very few are using cisco pix, except some companies hosting web. Even, one of our ISP are using checkpoint. Company like AT & T are also using that. I dun mean, cisco pix are not good, they are good, but sometimes, depend on the requirement of the company, coz, checkpoint is much more expensive compare with pix. If i were you, know checkpoint, even, if you dun work with you current compan, company out there, use checkpoint. And you know them. Learn something, which can help you in the careers.

Oh, one more thing,is the sun solaris, do you plan to go into system. If you do, pick this up. Let me tell something, most of the database sit on sun box. So, you also need to know oracle.

For network, in my opinion, you need to know on servers ( over my side, most of them are windows ) firewall, routers and switches. Those are good enough to help you to make a good living.

If you going for solaris, know abit on network, lots on the unix and oracle database. Not a bad choice either.

Your future, is on your hand, and i believe that you can make it man.

All the best to you.

Way I see it, network security can be of 2 types:

1. The frontline.
You're probably looking at Firewalls and generally the first point of entry into network. I think a good grounding with PIX + Checkpoint should get your really far in this.

2. Internal Security
Using the servers to implement security within the network. More about using policies (like GPO's in Win2K ,the Solaris equivalent, etc). If you're into this, you might consider Solaris/Win2K or whatever with on eye on implementing such policies.

HTH!!
