I have two 2501s that I want to connect together via serial cables. My question is - how should the serial ports be configured so that the routers can see each other?

Thanks

Since Cisco routers are designed as DTE only devices, they need a device what will supply clocking function over serial interface, such as CSU/DSU. What you need to do is configure your serial interface with "clock rate <speed in kbps>" command, eg clock rate 56000 (there must be a space between clock and rate), parameter speed is obtained using CiscoIOS internal help. This command must be entered on serial interface connected with a part of serial cable labeled DCE.
