Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any reason why some people like to set switch ports to 10 Base-T, half-duplex on a 10/100 Base-T, full-duplex network?

I've heard arguments that a network with multiple clients that are running 100 Base-T, full-duplex would overload servers that are also running 100 Base-T, full-duplex. The first client would get the full 100 Base-T, full duplex and others would recieve degraded performance.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thank you,

If all of the clients on switch were running 100Mbit FD and the server was also running 100Mbit FD then the server's link is clearly oversubscribed and could suffer high. However, in order for the oversubcription to be a problem the clients would have to be generating quite a bit of traffic. Some people like to throttle the bandwidth by simply forcing the connections to 10Mbit in order to reduce the chance that the server's connection would be jammed (although enough busy 10Mbit connections could still swamp the server's connection).

Also, your thought about the first client's connection being good while others are bad when the server connection is busy is not correct. As bandwidth utilization increases performance for all clients decreases.

FYI..
I've had to change the speed and mode to support some older HP printers. Hope this helps you.
