| Hi everyone,
Currently working on the BCRAN course for CCNP.
Can any CCNPs (or IEs) out there recommend 3 specific routers/switches to buy for a home mini-lab to obtain hands-on experience as I'd prefer to use real routers rather than simulators?
Thanks | |

| 2600 router and cat 5000 switch
one other piece, 2500 router... the differences between cat 5000 and 1900 switches can be based on theory study easily.
base on your requirement, this should be ok to start. (not specific for bcran right? just general ccnp?)
bcran if I remember have a good portion on DDR and ISDN? I would just give a quick run through of the book, not to study, but to understand the depth so you can make inteliigent decision on what to buy so you can maximize the benefit.if isdn is there, you may want to rent some rack time.
some is pretty cheap and have enough routers/switches to play, so after your mini lab, a week b4, you may just spend like 30 bucks for some rack time and run through the more complicated labs in the book.

| 1 2520 and 1 2503 for routers. (lot's of flexability with the 2520; frameswitch, etc.) both with 16M/16F. Also 2502 are very cheap now.ISDN emulator (approx. $600) at. http://www.vconsole.net/. Also do search for NANGEN software which you can buy for ($75) and run it on a PC to emulates several AS nicely for BGP labs!
1 5505 or 2924XL EN depending on your budget. The 2924 will give you a good feel for VLANs, but the IOS is more router like.
And if your budget is NOT blown a PIX 501 (got mine for $460 on Ebay) w/3DES for security work. VPN etc.
It's a great sandbox to play in.Enjoy.

| Thanks for that Bill, but one question, wouldnt the 2503 be preferred over the the 2502 for its extra BRI port which the 2502 doesnt have?
Also someone told me that I should try and buy routers with at least 2 ethernet ports, can you suggest a use for this along the certification requirements.

| victor8p,
You are welcome. I just mentioned the 2502, because it has 2 serial interfaces and it's cheap. I picked one up for $160. You can still use the 2 serial interfaces and attach them to 2 different routers.
I have a 2520, 2502 and 2501. I will be trying to get a 2503 soon, as well as a ISDN emulator (abit expensive). As I said earlier, I also have a PIX 501 3DES.
I agree with 1 ethernet, but I don't see the need for two. 2 routers on either side of a 2520 are preferrable, so that you can do a VPN from router to router or VPNs from PCs attached at either end or other combinations. Good practial experience.
There is nothing like having your own toys to play with.
Enjoy your (Sandbox). | |

What kind of budget would be the minimum?
I just finished the CCNA and want to get started before forgetting too, too much.
All I can say is "budgetissimo blownage"

| Guys!
think of adding a Cat 3550 on your racks as it might help you on ytour CCIE lab preps in future!!
Also a Cat 5000 or a cheaper 2948G would be a best solution for practicing the 'Set' based commands.
ISDN sim is a must. Try the teltone product I know it is a bit costlier sometimes as mcuh as twic e the vconsole product but it worth investment. Lots of teltone demostrators makes are available in ebay around $1K. |
