Question on bay routers and SNMP
|

| Hi, I just have two general questions:
1. What routing protocols do bay routers use? RIP would be one, OSPF another. What about IGRP and EIGRP? These are cisco prop. arent they?
2. Can an SNMP agent and NMS reside on the same machine? These are just software modules so I guess you could install them on the same machine. From my reading there is no mention that they can reside on the same machine and properly carry out their functions.
Would there be a reference to the two questions above somewhere?
thanks

| IGRP and EIGRP are both Cisco proprietary. OSPF is definitely the protocol to use in a non-Cisco environment, but it takes a lot more planning and careful implementation than RIPv1 or v2.
Not sure what NMS is, so I can't comment on that. But I'm sure about the first part. | |

| Hi,
thanks for the reply. I don't know why I asked these questions in the first place because I basically answered them myself. You are right, OSPF for bay net router would be the choice (never used a bay net router, only cisco and 3com).
As for the other question, both the agent and NMS (Network management system) can reside on the same device. This is uncommon, but it works. I have never tried it myself.
Thanks,

| Hey ya'll. I'm in a Nortel Shop and we have passport 8000 series layer 3 switches (routing switches) as well as various models of Bay (Nortel) routers.
We use OSPF for our routing protocol.
Correct about IGRP and EIGRP. Can't use in a heterogenous environment - can't use easily.
Bay Routers also support other routing protocols such as BGP and RIP. |
