| -Lost my job today, victim of corpoarte downsizing. They gave me a nice severence package of 8 weeks which should hold me over for a few weeks. (gotta feed the kiddies) Man it sucks to lose your job. I busted my XXX night and day for this company. I spent the last month and 1/2 configuring, testing and deploying all the equipment for a failover data center. I mean I was working like 70 80 hrs a week to get it done on schedule for them and then as soon as I finished ...BAM>>> They throw the axe at me.
AARRRRGHH, just needed to rant a bit.
Anyone here looking for a job or just recently find one? Tell me what I have to look foward too? I've been employed with this company for 2 years so its been awhile since I was out there pounding on the pavement.

| Sorry to hear that man, I know it must suck for you, I've heard alot of companies are downsizing. Just hope everything works out man. | |

| Well you know that all companies are downsizing and it gets worse everyday.
Best thing to do is to do some consulting and also try to get another position, the market will not be stable for a very long time to come.
unfortunatley finding a job will be more of an headache than losing one, all recruiters have been labled as harsh and very stringent on who they will select for a darn interview.
It's an uphill battle and you have to consult on the side to cover for your children and eventually you will land another job.
Sites like dice, monster, flipdog, hotjobs are all propoganda sites, i have yet to see those sites land any jobs for any of my peers. I consult and do fine, but i have thought about full time, with this market landing a great job is not as easy as it use to be.
Hope all goes well for you.

Not saying these sites are no good, but I've yet to see anything positive come from these sites either. There's tons of job postings on there but every person that i know that has put there resume or applied for a job has gotten nil returns.

| Sorry to hear about that. Most companies in the I.T /Telecoms sector are having to downsize to minimise losses. Unfortunately making people redundant is an easy way of cutting operating costs.
My company has down-sized so much that it is putting extra strain on those still working because they have ended up taking over the workload of the redundant workers. And I'm telling you we can't cope. Even the customers are saying they seen a drop in the quality of service. This is something very sad indeed when a service provider should be offering just that 'SERVICE'.
Just my 2p's worth ( about $0.03)

| Sorry to hear about the job loss - not much more I can add to the other posts, just keep your chin up and something will turn up.
Good luck in you search.
|
| Hey just a note on the brighter side, I on the other hand landed the best job of my life through an add on DICE. You never know whats out there, so make sure you consider everything as a possibility. And believe me if your good there will be a job for you. | |

This is bad news at the best of times; I feel for you. I was there 2 months ago, having been out of contract for 3 months. Not good for a self-employed consultant, married with kids, mortgage and bills etc.
Have you tried, www.jobserve.com ?
Good luck

This on is pretty good. Alot of contract jobs on there, plus most are for bigger cities.
|
| I'm really sorry to hear the bad news - I don't know you but regularly benefit from posts you have made on the forum and appreciate any tips.
It's doubly bad seeing as all the work you've put in for them, if I recall you were asking pix questions a while ago was that for work??
Anyway, I had an interview today and it went pretty well so I will try and give you a few questions (though my head was buzzing afterwards so I can only remember a few!) :
Typical Q's,
1. Tell me about the job you currently do? (I guess for you that will mean about your last job, sorry!!)
2. Why do you want to leave it?
3. How much salary do you want?? (horrible question)
4. What qualities can you offer us?
5. Do you work well in a team?
6. Do you prefer working in a team or on your own?
you get the gist??
They then asked me scenario type questions :
awkward customers, workplace disagreements, persuasive situations (i.e influencing somebody) and a couple of others whioch escape me..
I then had a technical test - pretty much CCNP q's such as why does rip2 allow VLSM, a couple of configs i.e. access list and HSRP, how many layers in the 7 layer model (i'm kidding), subnetting etc.
Followed by a technical interview, again nothing to complicated what manufacturers have I worked with, what kit, explain NAT to a beginner.
It lasted about 3.5 hrs in total, but that was all my interviews done, no return visits.
A book I used was called great answers to tough interview questions, I also used it for my current job. I don't know the ISBN no, and I've just lent it to somebody literally 10 mins ago.
Anyway, good luck on the hunting I hope you find something pretty soon. I'd advise stusying hard while you have the chance and before any interviews recap using cramsesssions brainbuzz for CCNA etc.
(and the interview went quite well, find out soon hopefully)

| Beenframed,
If you lived near Dallas then maybe I could flex alittle, but chances are you don't.
I can tell you this, My 4-month old job is very secure. Although my current job is not in the IT/networking department, I'm hoping it will be soon.
I did my research (while the economy was and still is struggling) which led me to my current employer. The contracts that my company holds is around 70% gov issued. As a result my company and it's value has actually gone up and has NOT gone down since the downturn in our market.
Have you heard of ROSS PEROT? his former company the LARGEST COMPUTER outsourcing co (EDS) is the only company ahead of us,,,and we are soon to be as big.
I wish you luck, and do your research on the contracts your prospecting company holds,,,,
I thnk i over heard some fellow employess saying how, If EDS lost it's very very large contract with IBM,,,that we would most likely take over in our current market.
Farewell,,,and good luck,,,,,

Don't worry and get this time to enjoy your family a little more.

| I feel your PAIN!!!
Things will and are coming around a bit, not much, but lots of companies have pent-up demand and need for services, look for a HUGE improvement by the end of June 2002.
In-the-mean-time, one of my FAVE job-search

Give it lookie, and don't be afraid to re-locate if you have too!!! Sometimes the mountain does not come to you.
