Hello everyone. I'm pursuing a dba cert at this time, but I am intrigued by cisco. I would highly appreciate it if someone would tell me the certs required to obtain a career working with cisco products, or plain and simply become a network engineer, or whatever the title is called.
Would it just be:
Network+, CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, CCIE?
Perhaps would an MCSE also be desirable? Are there anymore fields a person going for this type of job would need expertise in? You see where Im going. Please tell me. Im a complete novice although I have taken networking courses at college. I am familiar with the steps of what you need to become a database expert, I am just clueless when it comes to cisco or networking jobs for that matter. Thanx.

Certs are always desirable when applying for a network related job. Experience is usually more desirable. Now is a very difficult time at finding a "tech" job given the economy. Having firewall experience and certs would definitly help in your search for finding a network engineer job. Just remember that your first job may not be the one you really want but if your getting some experience from that job it will help you out tenfolds in the future.

Robocop,

If you want to earn a career as a network engineer. The first thing I would do would be to get A+ certified. This gives you a hardware/software background that everyone in I/S should have. Besides, the test is very easy for most I/S professionals, and it really is a good stepping stone. After your A+, go for the CCNA, which is the entry level network professional certification. You should then know enough about what its all about to decide where you want to develop your skills.

When it comes to networking jobs like cisco, mcse, etc. Do you have to do any programming like in java or any other language? Or is it all mostly just IOS commands?

Knowing UNIX is often a big plus.... wish I did.
