Author BSCI or BSCN?
Mat P

I've been looking on the Cisco web site and have noticed that either BSCI or BSCN (only one though) can go towards CCNP, but only BSCI goes towards CCIP.

Any opinions on doing BSCI instead of BSCN, as it can be used for both should I later decide to go for CCIP? The only amendment to BSCI is that IS-IS has been added.

What do you guys (or girls) think??

Mat

As your certifications state that you are a CCDP, does that not mean that you have already passed the BSCN exam. As far as I was aware the only differing exams for CCNP/CCDP is the CIT & CID exams.

Should your certs possibly read CCNA, CCDA.

Just a thought

I don't know about delusions of grandure? I'm sure that you will be reaching the dizzy heights of CCDP in the not too distant future.

Best of luck with your studies

There were a few posts earlier on this question, to summarize the information, most identified that the CCIP was a telco certification for WAN connections only. If you notice the requirements, there is no switching, remote access, or support. From the summary, it is the exact same test but they added IS-IS Routing Protocol to the list of torture.

Not sure if is still in Beta but if you take the BSCN and then have the time to hit IS-IS, if the test is still in Beta, you can usually take it for $50.00. Would be like killing two birds with one stone so later if you want to come back and finish it off, you don't have to go through that hell again.

Just an idea.

Thanks Depamo, I had seen the earlier posts, I was hoping that now that the cert has been around a few months people may have some experience of it.

I'm playing with the idea of sitting the BSCI instead of the BSCN rather than taking 2 exams as it can go towards the CCNP. Maybe getting the BSCN under my belt will be a good idea, then following it up with a couple of weeks study for BSCI as work are paying the bills.

I also realise that BSCN has a reputation for being the harder of the 4 CCNP exams, I'm not sure if I'll just be making a hard exam even harder for myself especially as I have no experience of IS-IS. I've mentioned in another post that I'm going to do the BSCN studying and if it feels OK then study IS-IS from the Cisco site.

As for being for the telecoms arena, Cisco do mention that in the intro to the cert but it currently has "specialisations" in Cable, MPLS and security. Reading between the lines it looks like they will be introducing content delivery networking, wireless (read that somewhere but can't find it right now!) and IP Telephony. I also currently work for a telecoms reseller (although as a network analyst) and are being asked more and more frequently about VoIP, wireless (Lucent unfortunately!) and I am due to go on a Content delivery networking course in the next few months.

The more I think about it the better an idea it becomes - I think I'll have to decide in a couple of months when I'm ready for BSCN.

Thanks again for your input.

As far as taking classes, I would take the BSCI Class if the money was the same so I would get more out of it. From reading the summaries and having taken and passed the Routing Exam already, I would not take BSCI as it encompasses all the information in the BSCN plus IS-IS. Unless you are going to work for a very large ISP, you won't need that protocl validation. If you manage to get through the BSCN exam with a good deal of understanding, you won't have any trouble picking up IS-IS. If you plan to get a CCIP Certification, then you will save $100.00 by taking tht BSCI instead.

But don't forget, there is no material out for the BSCI yet, who knows what is on the exam or what the format looks like?? I don't know anyone that has taken the course or the exam so there is quite a large margin for uncertainty on what is expected and how the knowledge is tested.

Thanks for the responses, I'm going to see how I get on with the studying then make a decision. Unfortunately my company won't pay for classes so it's all self study.

I'm the only one not getting Cisco training because we don't need any more CCNP's for our partnership status. I'm not going to let them hold me back though - CCNP, CCDP and then the world's my oyster.

Thanks again.

Got the same problem. I don't get cash for classes or tests but my company lives off my credentials for proposals. Guess that this is showing initative that will hopefully be recognized later when promotions come around.

Anyhow, understand what you are saying.
